  1. Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter · 4h Chiefs likely will have running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire but be without Le'Veon Bell for today’s AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills, per source. Additionally, the Chiefs will test WR Sammy Watkins pregame, but don’t sound optimistic he will play today.
  2. This week the team has decided to activate two players from the practice squad, both of whom they’re very familiar with. First up the Chiefs decided to activate WR Marcus Kemp to the 53-man roster. Kemp was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Hawaii back in 2017. He’s spent time on the 53-man roster, practice squad and on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad this season. Kemp’s role is typically playing special teams for Kansas City, but with Sammy Watkins questionable, having him available could be important on offense as well. The Chiefs also decided to elevate DB Chris Lammons for the second consecutive week. He’s another guy who primarily plays a special teams role on the coverage units, but with Rashad Fenton questionable he could also provide valuable depth in the secondary. Since both players have been elevated to play special teams before, I wouldn’t read too much into what their elevations mean about the status of Fenton and Watkins. It’s entirely possible that the Chiefs make others inactive in order to make way for Kemp and Lammons.

  6. maybe there's hope? Dave Toub says Chiefs fixed 'operational glitch' causing Harrison Butker's missed kicks Charles Goldman January 22, 2021 8:54 am Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s troubles with extra points returned during the AFC’s divisional round, but this time it was a different issue causing the problem. During the regular season, Butker missed a total of six PATs but hadn’t missed once since Week 9. Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub blamed those issues on the weather in some cases or even Butker “toeing the ball.” This time around they’ve identified the issue as an “operational glitch.” “Had nothing with what happened earlier,” Toub told reporters on Thursday. “It was an operational glitch that we had with the rotation of the ball; the laces came down in a weird spot. Not one time all year did that happen or in practice for that matter and it happened twice and both of those kicks we rotated a different way. It was just an operational glitch that we cleaned it up, he had a great week of practice and he was on point this week so we’re good.” Toub shared a great amount of detail about why this kick failed and how they’ve gone about correcting it in this particular situation. “(James) Winchester is so good as a snapper, he can count the rotations with his snap where the laces never appear for him for the hold, but in this case the laces appeared,” Toub explained. “Now there was a combination with the weather and a little bit short, whatever we did there, we figured it out this week. The laces showed up to where they were facing (Harrison) Butker and then Tommy (Townsend) has to deal with getting them out of the way which is a matter of which way we’re going to rotate the ball so rotated to where Butker could see the laces for a longer period of time. That’s not what we want to do so we want to rotate it the opposite way, so it goes away. I didn’t want to get real technical with it, but I guess you forced me to, but that’s really what it is. Like I said, it’s just an operational thing that we got ironed out and fixed.” In layman’s terms, the laces were the wrong spot when the ball got to the holder, then the holder spun the ball the long way to account for it. If you’ve ever seen the film “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” you know that kickers always want the laces facing out and away from them. Butker explained why it’s important, specifically for him, to have the laces in the right spot. But he also shouldered the blame as well because he’s trained for the ways that he can adjust to overcome issues with the laces and otherwise. “So every kicker is different, but for me I’m looking at the ground, the spot basically where the holders going to put the ball and then once the ball’s down my eyes normally raise up to look at the sweet spot of the ball so in a perfect world that ball is still so I can just hone in on the sweet spot and swing away,” Butker said on Thursday. “If the laces are a little bit off, then the ball’s going to be moving, but I’ve been very fortunate to have such a great operation the past couple months, past couple weeks so that in a game when the ball is moving, I didn’t handle it well and that’s on me because I do practice that during the week. Since our operation is so good, I do practice seeing bad laces, seeing the ball moving because at the end of the day, as a kicker, if the ball’s on the ground it’s your job to make the kicks so when that balls moving or whatever or if it’s perfectly still, you got to make the kick. We got a lot of good reps this week, and as I said as a kicker, you got to be able to handle everything no matter what.” Both Toub and Butker believe this is a quick fix and something that they’ve already accounted for in this practice week leading up to the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. As the stakes get higher in the playoffs, this unit will want things to be airtight. “Yeah definitely, I mean we’re not going to try and reinvent the wheel,” Butker said. “I think there are some minor adjustments we can all make, and we’re focused in for this next AFC Championship game and the biggest thing is just learning from past mistakes and correcting it and getting better and moving on.”

  9. Chiefs bring in ex Seahawk versatile lineman for a visit Britt, 29, is a former second-round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks by the way of the University of Missouri. He has experience playing all over the offensive line including center, left guard, right guard and right tackle. He started in 86 career games over the span of 2014-2019 but spent the 2020 NFL season as a free agent as he recovered from a serious knee injury suffered late in the 2019 season. The Chiefs have some future needs along the offensive line at a number of positions and having a versatile player like Britt in the fold could be valuable. If the visit went well, expect the team to sign him to the practice squad or possibly even a reserve/future deal. If you’re not familiar with reserve/future contracts, they allow players to sign with a new team prior to the beginning of the new league year without counting them toward the 53-man roster.

  12. The Kansas City Chiefs are getting some much-needed salary-cap relief by rolling over cap space into the 2021 NFL season. ESPN analyst Field Yates shared a list of all NFL cap space rollovers from 2020 to 2021. According to his numbers, the Chiefs will roll over just under $5.1 million in salary-cap space to the 2021 NFL season. This number is subject to change per Yates as the NFL has yet to audit these amounts to include incentives and cap credits from 2020. This number operates as a rough estimate of what the Chiefs will get toward their 2021 salary cap. Remember, the NFL salary cap for the 2021 season has a floor of $175 million due to profit losses related to the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s $23.2 million less than the 2020 salary cap. The decrease puts a big strain on teams who planned to have over $200 million in cap space to work with for 2021. Depending on where you get your information, the Chiefs are currently listed as $17-18 million over the projected $175 million salary cap total. There are some new reports suggesting that the projected cap number for the league will be closer to $180 million. No matter the case, rolling over this cap space helps Kansas City. Chiefs GM Brett Veach will still need to work on some cost-cutting measures over the offseason given the lower salary cap number. He’ll look into things like extensions, restructures and roster cuts in order to free up enough space to get the team under the cap, but this helps lessen the burden. We can also assume that K.C. probably won’t be overly active in free agency, beyond retaining a few pieces on ERFA or RFA contracts. They should have no problem finding the rest of the space necessary to get themselves under the cap.

  19. The latest on the status of Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes heading into the AFC Championship Game includes a little bit of good and a little bit of bad news. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, who was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Browns, has cleared “some big steps” in the NFL’s concussion protocol. He does, however, still remain in the NFL’s concussion protocol. That means it’s still too early to make the determination on whether he’ll play against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC title game. Schefter also reports that Mahomes is dealing with a foot injury. Andy Reid mentioned on Monday that he believed that the toe injury wouldn’t be an issue. It’s unclear if this indicates it’ll be more of an issue than initially expected. Mahomes still needs to clear the NFL’s return-to-participation protocols, but the fact that he’s expected to practice on Wednesday suggests that he’s already made his way through the first few phases. He could very well be approaching the final steps on Wednesday that would determine his availability for the AFC title game. Remember, Mahomes needs to be cleared by an independent neurologist in addition to Rick Burkholder and the Chiefs’ training staff. We’ll learn his practice participation tomorrow afternoon when Chiefs HC Andy Reid speaks with the media. If he’s limited it’s possible that it’ll have more to do with the foot injury than the concussion protocol. Whatever the case, it doesn’t seem like it’ll be too long before we officially know Mahomes’ status for the AFC title game against the Bills.
  20. and I bet he got that way after he became the Pats HC..NE media and all
