  4. Hi ya Jet.  Long time no visit.  A question.....Yesterday I lost five good friends in an airplane crash in a small private plane (essna 175, I think) outside Ponca City.   I thought that the smaller planes were a lot safer.   Is that a myth?  This is the first loss I can remember in about five years of people I know who were flying smaller planes.  They crashed five miles from the airport after takeoff.  Very sad.  Grandpa, son, two grandchildren and professional pilot.

Don't have the data, but I'd say small planes are much more dangerous.  The reasoning goes like this.  Small planes often have fewer backups, the main one being extra engines.  Engine fails on a multi-engined airplane, the pilot can fly on the remaining engines to a safe landing.  Engine fails on a single engined plane, you turn into an aluminum lawn dart.  Second factor:  Not always, but often the experience and training level of the pilot is less in small airplanes.  Pilot with fewer flight hours usually are flying larger airplanes.  That's not to put down the pilots in the above accident, only a general rule.  Hope that helps.  BTW, the most dangerous pilots are doctors and lawyers flying their own small airplanes.
