Just to clarify for those that didn't realize, but he won both MVP and Offensive player of the year.

This actually was a surprise as all the talk was Brees would get Offensive player of the year as a compensation prize for not winning MVP but the voters did the right thing on both awards.

Wouldn't it seem weird for a player to win the offensive player of the year award but lose the MVP to another offensive player?  That shouldn't happen, especially if the same writers are voting for both awards.

You would think considering the MVP is always an offensive guy.  But it happens all the time.

It's usually (but not always) either:  (1) MVP is a QB and OPOTY is a RB/WR, or (2) OPOTY is a "runner up" award, or (3) someone wins them both.  That Patrick won both is just a testament to the type of year people thought he had.  I think it also explains why Brees got a fair number of votes, for people who were treating the award as more of a runner-up/consolation award.  Patrick got 41/50 votes for MVP, better than for OPOTY.
