Makes me wonder if he know that his days are numbered so he’s trying to milk the injury to get another year or two.  I hate to think that but I’ve never seen anything take so long to diagnose in pro sports.  They get preferencial treatment pretty much and normally don’t don’t have to wait to see specialists.

Hope im dead wrong.

I dont wonder about it all. I'm convinced of it. Chiefs hands are tied, he's Tick on the underbelly of the Chiefs Org. We lost every game he played his year.. I'm beginning really not to like him  but  cant blame him he's got free $$ headn his way ..who wouldn't really?

Post June cut gets us $9.55M in cap.  Do we think we can replace him for $9.55M?  I know NFL regulated issue pens and clipboards aren't cheap but probably under the $9.55M amount?

Probably require a post June 1 designation.

Again from what I heard from local journalist Berry was cleared to play in October at some point  but chose on his own not to play because of fear of another Achilles tear.  He said the Chiefs were very frustrated by this which does indicate he was protecting his money first and foremost. And that is the likely scenario today as he looks at his options.

Hes got us over a barrel for one more year if there’s ANY legit belief he can be healthy in 2019. Since he was cleared to play though I think that’s exactly where we are at. He can play, but will he.  My guess is they will weigh whatever Berry’s reaction to this specialists prognosis heavily.

This guy is so respected in that locker room that it’s hard for other leaders to emerge with him here.  He’s gotta be all in or we have to move on.

I don't see how Berry would be in a win win situation with this injury....If Chiefs clear him and Berry in fact decided not to have surgery how could he refuse to play?  From everything I have read is the bone spur cannot heal itself and MUST require surgery if you want to help the pain and lower the risk of that spur tearing his Achilles.  So if Berry doesn't get it fixed he should go back to playing and if he sits out the Chiefs should be able to fine/not pay him because at that point he is no different than say Mahomes being healthy and saying he refuses to play.

The way the Chiefs have handled this whole situation since Oct   tells me he's "Hands Off" He is soo loved by the Lockerroom that it makes him untouchable..JMO of course.

Im in the screw eric berry camp, and when his days here are done i want everyone to remember what he is.

he, sucked his rookie contract except for his free agency year where he played like a stud.

since signing the big deal not only has he been constantly hurt, but also sucked when he did play.

he has spent more time giving the organization and therefore the fanbase a big FU by refusing to get healthy than time spent being productive.

i give clark hunt the blame for this, as I think it was clear dorsey did not want to re-sign this guy. Clark believed berry to be an inspirational story and good for the city.

i was never a dorsey fan but I won’t blame him for this contract.

Im sorry if this is harsh but when the guy signs the biggest safety deal of all time, then on the next day publicly bashes the chiefs organization for how long it took to get the contract done and then refuses to attend training camp that season i put myself firmly in the FU eric berry camp.

End of the day players will play because they know it could be them next.......team went on when DJ and Tamba were sent packing.

again JMO but they still had Berry to fill that gap..other than Houston they may not have another leader   of similar stature.. again JMO

I get the feeling from things I read that he's a moody guy that brings an I can do whatever I want attitude into the locker room. But likewise I continue to read about his incredibly hard private workouts (even last season when he wasn't playing). It's really a mixed bag with this guy. Do some of the younger players simply respect the legend of EB more than the guy they actually know. Or does his work ethic and skill level still command that respect? Again it just seems almost impossible for a young guy to emerge from his shadow as a leader of the defense. I just can't tell at this point whether that's good or bad.

One thing is for sure. This went from Eric Berry's team to Patrick Mahomes team overall. And that's a very good thing.

Hey, I know, maybe it's something that Berry isn't going to announce?

I mean, it's not like they're required to tell us anything about it.

Yep.

The last time he talked to the media and was asked about his heel he kept saying it was complicated.   I don't think it's a cut and dry situation as it's being made to be.  Part of me wonders if something with his cancer is resurfacing which would put that surgery on the back burner until that's resolved.

Hard to argue with a lot of what you say but he did have a 5 year stretch in his career where he was really good in four of those seasons including four Pro Bowls and three first team All Pro years.

Also Dorsey had a way of pissing off veterans by waiting to long to negotiate in earnest. Clark had to be jaded by this to some extent. So while Dorsey did indeed play hard ball with an insurance deal he wanted Berry to pay for I still think he’s got some culpability here.  That said I really would never list this as a Dorsey failure like I do several others.

And I agree Berry should have been here in the offseason after signing that huge deal. But again his private workouts are supposed to epically hard. I’ve heard he’s been brought to tears with the amount of agony he puts himself through.  But it’s clear through all this he’s a me guy.

Overall you’ve got a really good take here in my opinion.

I realize he made pro bowls during that first contract, but whats burnt into my memory is antonio gates especially, and most tight ends for that matter, absolutely owning him for years until the chiefs gave up on him for pass coverage and made him a run stuffing safety.

admittedly he was excellent at that, which is why i say he played like a stud his contract year.

for this reason i always thought berry should be playing some sort of linebacker position. He would probably be a good 4-3 weak linebacker, but at this point i would rather give odaniel a chace.

I agree with your point of dorsey being disastrous at extending players in a timely manner.

He was not bad other than a few games and his first year as a rookie against TE. That rumor was dispelled but people tend to remember him his first part of rookie season or his first few games back from injury. See old link below thst addresses it.
