The Kansas City Chiefs were one of a number of teams on hand Monday to watch a workout from West Virginia University wide receiver Marcus Simms, who is among the players to have declared for the upcoming supplemental draft.

According to a report from Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com, the Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins, Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, and Philadelphia Eagles were all on hand to watch Simms (5-11 6/8, 188 pounds), who clocked 40-yard dash times of 4.40, 4.45 and 4.49 seconds with a vertical jump of 36 inches. Pauline reports the 49ers and Vikings sent their directors of scouting to watch Simms, while the Raiders were represented by general manager Mike Mayock.

Simms declared for the supplemental draft in June after initially planning to transfer from West Virginia. He totaled 87 catches for 1,457 yards and eight touchdowns in three seasons with the Mountaineers, along with 41 kick returns for 992 yards (24.2 average) and 23 punt returns for 157 yards (6.8 average). As a junior in 2018, Simms hauled in 46 catches for 699 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games after catching 35 passes for 663 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games as a sophomore. Simms was suspended for the team’s season opener as a sophomore after a DUI.

Simms is one of four players available in the supplemental draft, which is reportedly scheduled for July 10. Other prospects to have declared for the draft include linebacker Shyheim Cullen of Syracuse, tight end Devonaire Clarington of Northland (Minn.) Community College, and safety Jalen Thompson of Washington State. When it comes to the supplemental draft process, teams are arranged in a predetermined draft order that consists of three groups -- playoff teams from the previous season, non-playoff teams from the previous season, and non-playoff teams with six or less wins from the previous season -- and the draft order within those groups is determined by a weighted lottery based on a team's 2018 record. Any team interested in a player will have to submit a bid in the round they wish to select the player, and if they are successful in their bid, they will give up a draft pick from that round in next year's draft. Simms is projected to be a possible late-round selection.

The Chiefs currently have an opening at the wide receiver position, where youngsters such as Byron Pringle, Marcus Kemp, Gehrig Dieter, Rashard Davis, Davon Grayson, Felton Davis, Jamal Custis, and Cody Thompson are competing for spots behind Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, and Mecole Hardman. One hangup for the Chiefs in this matter might be their current crop of 2020 draft picks, as they only have two Day 3 picks at the moment (Round 4, Round 5) after trading their sixth-round pick for linebacker Darron Lee earlier in the spring and their seventh-round pick for safety Jordan Lucas last summer.

I'm not sure anybody goes in this supplemental draft. I would assume we're just doing our due diligence for when they're all free agents.

That and you never know when a position of strength can become a weakness in a short time.   We might not need the kid now but in year from now you never know.

only one pick was done by the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals selected Washington State safety Jalen Thompson in the fifth round of the NFL supplemental draft Wednesday.

Thompson was the only player selected. Per NFL rules, the Cardinals will forfeit their fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft next April.

All others are free to sign with whoever they want. See if the Chiefs go after the WR or TE now.
