Williams and Thompson bring more speed and athleticism so I still believe McCoy will be used for short yardage and end of game situations. I would use him as a third down back and not put the short yardage wear and tear on him. We need him in the playoffs. Not sure how they will use him. There are exceptions, like Allen. So the likely thing is that McCoy will never be who he was, but there is a chance he can still have a productive late stage of his career. You make a fair point. This protects Mahomes a lot, because they will be too afraid to do that if McCoy is in there. This would seem to be a major Mahomes protector gambit as much as anything. Also, think about the clock-killing benefit when we are hanging onto a one score lead late in the game. Scoring fast is one thing, but getting first downs has its place. Think about its effect when playing against Von MIller or Chubb. great point. the other factor i think is what it does to the opposing defenses and how they have to account. hunt did this but i don’t think williams do even though damian put up,great numbers. mccoy just like hunt scares a defense. perhaps the other thing is maybe running the ball more and allowing our d to rest.. i think the chiefs only had like 3 or 4 scoring drives over 800 min. moons314 2,463
This barely registered for me. Dude is 31, and I think people are expecting a lot out of him. He's more likely the Chad Henne of the rb position that can pull some spot duty and be salty in pass pro. I don't hate the signing, I just don't think it's going to amount to much on the field. Lamardirts 2,114
Took me the better part of today to warm up to the acquisition but im drunk on kool aid and now think he will have a bounce back year on our team. He won’t be the lead back but I think he will turn some heads and be valuable down the stretch.
jetlord 10,209
There's a good article in The Athletic that just came out on McCoy. It explained that while McCoy may have lost a step, the running stats were mainly due to a horrible line. They broke down how many time he had no chance to get past the line, something like 60%. Some of the clips showed he still has good quickness if not his peak speed.
dhitter 1,424
McCoy is not 25 yr old McCoy it's true. He may have lost a step speed wise, but he still can juke and change direction on a dime. He is a savvy vet who I believe will yield quite a few choice moments for the Chiefs this year. This offense is ridiculous!! FANATIC

Being able to juke and move and change directions and make people miss is a skill that will still get him a lot of yards. And you don't need a lot of speed to be a great pass blocker. Maybe account for 50 yards/game with Williams as the primary RB and Thompson more an open field specialist and special teams player. Darrell might just be a short yardage specialist. This could really fit the definition of running back by committee.
gochiefsgo 380
I expect all of them to get ample opportunities. You don’t need to pick just one to be the starter. It looks liked Reid just said they are both starters. Williams and McCoy are costarters apparently. oldtimer

McCoy could function so highly and with so much stamina, that he could end up with the bulk of carries, or it could go the other way. I don't think they will ever use McCoy for short yardage. Too much wear and tear. As you say, we have both Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson for that. But Reid will keep defenses confused by using a RB that seems to indicate one thing and then Mahomes might pass. It could be 3rd and 1/2 yard to go, Reid would put in Darrel William, and then Mahomes might throw a 70 yard bomb to Hill or Hardman. Reid will establish a pattern and then use that to fool the defense when the time is right. It really is an embarrassment of riches. gochiefsgo
jetlord 10,209
Loved McCoy's presser today. He made the points that he wanted to go where there's a chance to win a championship, play for Andy Reid, and not pay California taxes. Smart guy.
