The Kansas City Chiefs have added their first player on a reserve/future deal.

Several teams already have a head start on signing players to these types of deals because their season is already over. The Chiefs, of course, are in the midst of playoff preparations for the divisional round. Still, they’re looking to add a few promising players to the mix.

The first of those players is Anthony Lanier, a 6-6 285-pound defensive end who fits the mold that Steve Spagnuolo likes for his scheme. According to the NFL’s transaction report, the Chiefs added Lanier on reserve/future deal on Wednesday.

Lanier went undrafted in the 2016 NFL draft after playing collegiately for HBCU Alabama A&M. He’s since been rostered in Washington playing a combined 15 games between the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He was highly productive during 2017, accumulating 14 total tackles, five tackles for loss, five sacks and six passes defended.

Lanier spent the 2018 season on the Los Angeles Chargers’ practice squad. He didn’t make it through final roster cuts with the Chargers ahead of the 2019 season. Now, he’ll get a chance to go through that process again with the Chiefs in 2020.

It’s not clear if Lanier is related to Chiefs legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Willie Lanier, but the two have met before.

If you’re unfamiliar with reserve/future contracts, they allow players to sign with teams before the end of the current league year. They won’t count against the active roster during the current league year. When the new league year begins in March, Lanier’s contract will count against the 90-man offseason roster. Until then, he cannot be activated to the team or participate in practice and the like.
