Franchise tag not used this year?

Would really screw us if this comes to fruition.

Reports that the NFL and NFLPA might be closing in on a new collective bargaining agreement came as a surprise earlier on Wednesday.

Among the topics, the NFL is planning for a 17-game regular season and a new playoff format to start next season.

However, there are other short-term implications. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, a new CBA being signed ahead of March 18 (the start of the new league year) would prevent teams from being able to use the franchise tag.

Something else to watch in CBA talks. If a new deal is agreed to by March 18, it would start with the 2020 league year and run through 2029. Teams would lose the ability to use both franchise and transition tags in 2020. Affects Cowboys, Titans, Bucs, among others.

This is no small thing. Stars such as Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill, among others, would be impacted if that came to fruition.

NFL teams typically use the dreaded franchise tag to avoid seeing their top-end players hit the open market.

If that’s not going to be the case this offseason, it’s going to lead to chaos on the free-agent market once March 18 comes calling.

Stay tuned.

Would not affect us since we only have 1 guy worth tagging.  The tweet is talking about the last year of a CBA being able to use BOTH the franchise and transition tags, instead of normally being able to only use one or the other.   If a new CBA takes effect it would go back to normal rules.  There's not much will with the players union to eliminate the tags, since it only affects a small percentage of the players, so I doubt that they eliminate either tag.  The numbers may change but I doubt they go away.

They're not saying we would lose the ability to franchise tag someone - well I know the article literally said that but he's wrong.

The guy that wrote the article obviously either didn't read the tweet carefully or doesn't know his hat from his ass.

lol.  Tannehill and Dak should never be included in the same sentence as the term "stars".
