Projected Cap space

Recommended Posts

The cap was projected to be near $200 million.  Now it's come in at a little over $198 million and the league minimum salaries rise by about $100,000/player.  Assuming the Chiefs have about half their players at league min., that will eat up over $2.5 million.  There's really no relief for the Chiefs in the new CBA.  They still have to release some players to sign Mahomes and keep some of their FAs like Pennel, Wis, and a few other lower priced players.   Letting Watkins go will give them space to pay Jones on the tag, but that's about it.

The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of pending free agents and in the coming days will know which of those players will return for the 2020 season.

According to Kansas City Star beat writer Sam McDowell, the Chiefs won’t seek to re-sign DT Xavier Williams. Kansas City added Williams when he was a restricted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. They signed him to a two-year offer sheet with the Chiefs worth $5 million and the Cardinals declined to match.

Williams played high school football in Grandview, Missouri and was a Chiefs fan. He had a chance to play for his hometown team and win a Super Bowl with them.

The Chiefs will not be bringing back free agent DT Xavier Williams, per source. Williams missed 11 games with an ankle injury but returned from IR and played 30 defensive snaps in the playoffs.

Williams played 3-4 defensive end in Bob Sutton’s defense in 2018 before making the switch to 4-3 defensive tackle for Steve Spagnuolo in 2019. He played just five games during 2019’s regular-season before being placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain.

Ultimately, Williams would become one of the two players the Chiefs brought back from injured reserve, joining QB Chad Henne. He’d play in games against the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans during the postseason with 30 defensive snaps and 10 snaps on special teams. Williams will finish his time in Kansas City with 55 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two tackles for loss and two QB hits.

If there’s one good piece thing about the Chiefs’ decision on Williams, this increases the likelihood that Kansas City returns both Chris Jones and Mike Pennel who are also free agents at the defensive tackle position.

I'm with you.  Is there anyone who has an idea where that money went?

Believe the roll over money was absorbed into this years for paying the cap hits of Hill and such. They freed up money last year in case it was needed to add new players but kicked the hits to this year? Found something on it.

salary cap with Frank Clark’s help

11a1b1ae2d506f53ae03954dc0afc57f?s=44&d=mm&r=pgby Matt Conner5m ago

The Kansas City Chiefs were able to squeeze under the new league year’s salary cap threshold with help from Frank Clark’s contract and Cam Erving’s release.

The Kansas City Chiefs had until Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. C.T. to squeeze under the salary cap threshold for the 2020 league year in the NFL. Thanks to some contractual maneuvering with star pass rusher Frank Clark and the decision to move on from offensive lineman Cam Erving, the Chiefs were able to do just that.

Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports first had the news:

It’s interesting to see that the Chiefs could make it under the cap of $198.2 million without having to answer any questions as of yet on wide receiver Sammy Watkins or defensive tackle Chris Jones. Watkins has the single biggest cap hit of any wide receiver in the league and has been rumored to be released, traded, or restructured for months. Meanwhile, Jones has wanted a long-term deal for quite some time and it’s hard to tell exactly what the Chiefs will choose to do in that instance.

Instead, the Chiefs were able to open up some room thanks to their decision to not exercise a team option on Cameron Erving’s contract. The versatile offensive lineman will instead find a new home in free agency and he should have no problem finding work even as a backup given his ability to play tackle or guard. Erving’s option was for $3.25 million for K.C.

As for Frank Clark, there are no details on the numbers involved as of press time, but restructuring part of his base salary into a signing bonus means the Chiefs get short-term cap relief in 2020 while spreading out that same amount of money over the remaining years of the deal. Given Clark initially signed a five-year deal, then it means his final three seasons in K.C. will be even more expensive. For now, at least, the Chiefs have the room they need.

I think you let Wis and Pennel go adding to the comp formula for next year.   We have Nnadi, Saunders and Jones at this point with Speaks coming back and Kpass.   If we get this offseason right we set ourselves up to keep this comp thing going each year.   There will always be guys like Wis and Pennel that good scouts/gms can find by turning over the bottom of the roster.    The cap jumps big time next year which should be enough to take on a bulk of Mahomes contract plus Berry's dead money comes off the books next year along with whatever they do with Watkins.   We probably won't be players in FA this year or next unless we deal Jones and Watkins but we should net a good haul of comp picks next year.    Not to mention guys wanting to prove it playing with Mahomes.    You are right this cap number didn't help us but I think we will be fine!

Could also give Kelce a new long term deal basically locking him in to KC for his career.  He is on the books for $11.2M this year and $9M next.  Could easily give him a new 5 year deal and make it cap friendly for this year.

We got almost $30 million tied into Watkins and Berry.  Then 9 million in LDT

That doesn't help

See who they cant sign and let go? Have to be smart about it and stay ahead. They also had 3 or more contracts come up at once too for their big 3. They are really up against the wall for future resignings of their own or FA.

They lost Quinn, Byron Jones, Cobb, Sua Filo, Witten etc and still have close to 20 other FAs too. Sure they will sign some but to manage the cap they have so far and have so much leaving or to sign to retain is way above where I would want to be. Almost half their team or players were due for a contract.

When you have an expensive TE, WRx2, DE, Otx2, LG, and SS two thing happen.  First you are up against the cap.  Second, you win a SB if you have a top QB.  JMHO

Chiefs are in fine shape.

they got under. Still have jones and Watkins. I’d say they are doing fine.
