Chiefs adding punter.

https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2020/04/08/kansas-city-chiefs-to-sign-former-notre-dame-punter-tyler-newsome/?fbclid=IwAR1evMur2xl5Rjk1q0MDB-GWta1-E05gk5MxrVz6LQTr7zmbgCqR0LXE6yw

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to add depth to their roster, and this time they’ve added some competition among the specialists.

The Chiefs have agreed to terms with former Notre Dame punter Tyler Newsome on a one-year deal, as first reported by Desmond Talbot of NFL Draft Diamonds and confirmed by Kansas City Star beat reporter Herbie Teope.

It’s no secret that Dustin Colquitt is approaching the end of his career. He’s the longest-tenured player on the Chiefs’ roster and turns 38 years old in May. There’s no indication that he’s set to retire, but the Chiefs need to continue to prepare for his eventual departure. Last season, they brought in undrafted free agent punter Jack Fox to compete with Colquitt. Ultimately, Colquitt beat Fox out and retained his job for the Chiefs’ championship season.

Newsome is known best for his impressive show of strength at his pro day, posting 30 bench press repetitions of 225. To put things into perspective, that’s more repetitions than Chris Jones, Frank Clark, Mike Pennel, Derrick Nnadi, Alex Okafor, Khalen Saunders, and Tanoh Kpassagnon posted at their respective combine or pro days. Only practice squad defensive lineman Devaroe Lawrence had more bench press repetitions than Newsome at 31.

The 6-3 and 219-pound punter has a career average of 44 yards per punt. He accumulated a total of 9,909 punting yards in his four-year career with Notre Dame. A total of 75 of his 225 career punts with Notre Dame landed within the 20-yard line.

Newsome spent some time in the 2019 offseason with the Los Angeles Chargers but was released during 53-man roster cuts. Now, he’ll enter an offseason competition with one of the most veteran punters in the NFL.

Chiefs added DeAndre Washington RB to a one year deal.

Veach keeps adding bodies and allowing us to draft BPA with more picks now that they address some needs on the team.

Bashuad breeland back 1 year 4.5 mil.

what happened to everyone who was sure he was getting a 5 year 50 mil deal?

good news

I was one of those guys and I can tell you that I'm pumped about this signing.  We obviously still need 2 more legit guys back there but we at least have 3 capable starters on the roster now.

Yup, good value for sure. Breeland is a better player than kendall fuller imo, but I figured he wouldn’t get a big deal because once you take a prove it deal you are generally stuck there.

with this signing and bringing back watkins and robinson chiefs can now select any position in round 1 other than qb. Although another cb is still very possible

veach having a good offseason.

He was our best corner in all but 3 games...can't believe he didn't get 6-8/yr for 3 year contract somewhere.  We are in a GREAT position this year for draft and season. Not a single major loss and can go BPA at any position.

So is Jones the only question left on the Chiefs' current roster.  I'm thinking Veach has a deal with him to sign long term with a favorable cap hit this season.  Either that or he's found a trade partner.  Next two weeks will be interesting.

I wonder too if Miami is very interested in Jones but want to see if they can either A)  Trade up to #1 for Burrow OR B ) What is anything they will need to trade up for Tua.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Miami get Tua at #5 and then send #18+#26 to us for Jones.

They won't give the Chiefs that much.  If KC can get #26 and a third, I'd be thrilled.

Why do you say that?  You don't believe the DeForest Buckner trade is a starting point?

I agree that objectively we should get more than they got for Buckner but my biggest complaint is what he does with trade value.  Would not surprised if we got less.

If we take off our homer glasses, Buckner could be worth more than Jones.  Many fans, and maybe GMs, see Jones as more one dimensional and while intense on pass plays, not a factor on every down.  I value and appreciate Jones and some of his rushes were game changers, but the run defense didn't become effective until Pennel was hired.  Other factor is that the Chiefs apparently haven't gotten a deal for Jones that they can't refuse to this point.

MEH with how Veach has been rolling with this off season and keeping every player he can I just don't see him agreeing to a trade that gets him less than what the Colts paid for Buckner.

I think its either a team pays up OR Jones plays 2020 on the tag and go for the back to back SB.

I have not seen any information saying GMs see Jones as a one dimensional player or even a GM saying Buckner is the better player of the two.  Can you please link

Of course, I don't have such a link.  No GM is going to publicly make such a statement.  That's why I used the word "maybe".  It's natural that home town fans tend to over value home town players.  We all do it.  Watch Chiefs' replays closely.  There are some plays where Jones just isn't part of the action.  Please don't accuse me of putting down Jones or his ability or play.  I'm just trying to point out that KC fans place more value on him that others do.

I don't see how "Veach is doing a good job with FAs this offseason" is more predictive than his past trades.  And I don't think he got great value in the Ford, Clark, or some of our draft day trades.

I'd actually argue that KC Fans think less of him than the rest of the NFL.

Links? 😉

It's okay to disagree,  That's what this board is all about.  At least we only have two mocks to play with now.  One with Jones and one without.

I always saw the Ford and Clark trades as NEEDS and NEEDED to be done.  Were as Ford didn't fit Spags system and we need to trade him away instead of paying him.  Then Clark became a huge need and he paid up for a guy that fit Spags D much better.

I see Jones as if we already had Clark on the roster and we either get a HUGE load for him or he stays under the tag.
