I remember well the 1985 draft of Ethan Horton. 
The very next player drafted: Jerry Rice.

To be fair, every team had Blackledge rated higher than every other QB in the draft except for Elway. 
Marino had injury issues that caused him to fall. 
After Elway was gone, any team would have picked Blackledge over who was left. 
It was our bad luck to have a higher pick than Miami or NY.

I remember him from super techmo bowl! Didn't realize we drafted him, though that could be due to me being 3 years old at the time.

This is where you out scout your opponents like we did with Mahomes. PM15 was by far our top ranked QB but obviously few other teams agreed with that.  By contrast the Chiefs organization was so badly outclassed in the Blackledge era you would almost expect them simply go with popular choice and make a Mitch Trubisky type error.
