Alternate Reality Draft Game

I've been doing an alternate reality draft game over at the Planet for a few years and just wanted to gauge the interest in it here. Here are the basic rules (with a couple of very slight tweaks from over there):

1. If you're a new player, start with the current Chiefs roster. If you've been playing for a while, you'll have your own evolved roster.

2. You can accept or reject the addition of any free agent that the Chiefs add. You do not get to add your own free agents from the league pool.

3. You automatically lose any free agent that the Chiefs lose if they were on the Chiefs' roster when you began playing or were added as a free agent by the Chiefs. You may keep any player the Chiefs cut if you choose.

4. You can accept or reject any trade the Chiefs make. If a player is involved, any Chiefs' player traded must be on your roster to accept the trade. If the traded for player is subsequently lost as a free agent by the Chiefs in a future year, you may retain that player if you choose.

5. You do not get players that the Chiefs draft. You draft your own players, using the same draft picks that the Chiefs have with two important notes:

 - If you receive a draft pick via a trade the Chiefs made and that you accepted, you get to use it.

 - If you cannot make the trade because you do not have the player or you choose not to accept the trade, you do not get the draft picks involved.

6. You can trade draft picks in the current year using the values in this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp. The other team's picks must be picks they held prior to the opening of the draft (i.e. they cannot be picks the other team traded for during the draft) and will be listed prior to the draft here: http://www.prosportstransactions.com/football/DraftTrades/Years/.

- You may only trade down ONE time before the draft or after the draft.

   - If you trade down before the draft, you get up to full value for your picks according to the chart.

   - If you trade down after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by 35 percent. Discount must be rounded up to the nearest 0.1 points and you may not receive any more in compensation than that value. Any trade down must involve only the picks of one NFL team, and you cannot receive more than two picks more than you give up (e.g. If you trade away one draft pick you cannot pick up more than three in return).

- You may only trade up ONE time before the draft or after the draft.

   - If you trade up before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to the chart.

   - If you trade up after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by 15 percent. Discount must be rounded up to the nearest 0.1 points and you may not receive any more in compensation that that value. Any trade up must involve only the picks of one NFL team, and you cannot receive more than two picks more than you give up (e.g. If you trade away the 10th and 42nd picks after the draft, then the value is 1,780*0.85 = 1,513 points, to which you may receive the 7th overall pick plus up to three other late-round picks that total no more than 13 points should the team you are trading with have them - or similar with the 8th or 9th overall picks and their respective values).

7. You must post your completed draft and lock in your draft picks before the start of the official training camp (not rookie minicamp). If you fail to lock in your picks, you receive the Chiefs’ draft automatically.

8. Before the start of the season, you must reduce your total roster to include only 53 players and lock it in by posting it. If you do not post your 53-man roster prior to the start of the season, you will have your previous year’s roster less any automatic FA losses plus the Chiefs’ draft class. If this exceeds 53 players, you will lose picks beginning with the 7th round and moving upward for each player in excess in the following year’s draft. Just like the NFL, you get penalized.

A couple of notes:

We don’t have a salary cap to worry about, so you are restricted from doing certain things (e.g. signing your own free agents) and from stopping certain actions (e.g. automatic loss of free agents) because of this.

You are also restricted in post-draft trade scenarios through discounting because you have the “unfair” advantage of knowing when a player would be drafted.

As this goes deep into the future, you may find that you would have had to draft the same player the Chiefs drafted in order to end up making player trades.

These are the overall breaks of the game and the ultimate goal is to find out if you’d be a great or terrible GM.
