With their fifth round selection at No. 177 overall, the Kansas City Chiefs have taken edge player Michael Danna. Danna is an edge rusher from the University of Michigan who stands at 6’2, 261 lbs. Danna was a reserve lineman for the Wolverines this year with 3 sacks after transferring over from Central Michigan for his final season. During his final season with the Chippewas, he had 14 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks, so he’s been disruptive in the backfield in years past and clearly the Chiefs see something here worthy of their final pick. Kpassagnon has one year left on his contract, and Speaks missed all of last season with an injury. Danna joins an impressive draft class for the Chiefs. Already the team has added running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire from Louisiana State, linebacker Willie Gay Jr. from Mississippi State, offensive lineman Lucas Niang from Texas Christian, and L’Jarius Sneed from Louisiana Tech. Unless the Chiefs trade back into the 2020 NFL Draft by giving up a player or future draft asset, the team’s front office is officially finished selecting players. AFCWEST 1,238 Posted April 25, 2020 Share Posted April 25, 2020 Craig Stout: Danna has short arms — and is shorter than any Steve Spagnuolo EDGE defender, adding questions about his fit and usage in the Chiefs defense. He could offer some upside as a dime rusher, but his lack of length could limit his effectiveness as an edge setter on early downs. Maybe Spagnuolo is considering moving him to off-ball linebacker to develop him as a SAM linebacker. There’s definite potential, but the fit remains to be seen. Grade: C- Kent Swanson: I have no clue what the plan is for Danna. Perhaps he’ll be playing as a SAM linebacker. This is my least favorite pick of the day, but you can’t get upset about a fifth-round pick. Grade: C- Matt Lane: This is a bit of a head-scratching pick at the end of an incredibly talented Chiefs draft class. Despite dominating at Central Michigan in 2018, Danna struggled against stronger competition to make the Michigan’s starting rotation. He’s powerful and explosive — with a relatively compact frame — but is super flexible and agile as a rusher. He doesn’t hit any of Spagnuolo’a hard thresholds for defensive ends who see significant snaps, so it’s a confusing pick. The coaching staff clearly likes his athleticism — they must see something with which they can work — but it doesn’t align with an otherwise stellar draft. He said they rotate in a lot of DEs to keep them fresh or he would have had better numbers. Also told me that the corner we signed as an UDFA is a stud. Info Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 250 pounds School: Michigan Position: EDGE Projected: 7th round-undrafted Combine Results: Did not receive combine invite Player Comparison: Ifeadi Odenigbo What he brings to the Chiefs This was a pretty surprising pick, but the old adage is that all it takes is one team to take a chance and on day three, you see teams take chances on guys. Danna is going to have a shot to make the roster as a member of the defensive line rotation and could be a solid depth piece. Strengths Another high-effort, high-motor Michigan prospect who wins with his attitude and determination on the field Plays with great power and is able win battles with his strength Packs a pretty good first punch and his hand work Is a strength of his Good leverage firing out of his stance, pad level helps offset lack of pure athleticism High football IQ and rarely played with lack of discipline in college 38 total tackles, three sacks, forced fumble playing in a pass rush rotation that included Josh Uche, Kwity Paye and Aidan Hutchinson, the latter two likely being NFL Draft selections next year with Uche coming off the board this year Weaknesses Lacks the explosiveness and bend that productive NFL pass rushers possess Much of his tape comes from playing in the MAC at CMU with obvious level of competition concerns There’s not much positional flexibility here, is not a player that projects to be able to kick inside at the next level nor play from a rush linebacker spot Does not posses the athletic ability to adjust if beaten off the snap, he has to be the hammer, not the nail Overview Danna is not a prospect that is going to blow anyone away, but he always looked like someone who belonged on the field — whether it be as one of CMU’s stars on defense or in a rotation like the one he played in at Michigan. His lack of athleticism is what holds him back the most and probably limits him to a special teams and depth piece in the NFL. Still, what he brings to the table is a high-character, high-motor prospect that should at the very least land him a training camp invite somewhere. This is a steady, solid college pass rusher who has the potential to hear his name called late on day three of the draft, even if it winds up being a undrafted free agent offer.
