Chiefs signed S Kurt Coleman.

Chiefs signed S Kurt Coleman.

Coleman was part of the Vikings' final cuts after inking a one-year deal with Minnesota in March. He was drafted by coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia and will be Kansas City's No. 4 safety. Coleman will mainly cover kicks for the Chiefs.

I'm beginning to think we have a problem with ego's versus making the team better with these signings. We're always trying to find these hidden gems instead of going after raw talent that would instantly make the team better. "Building" is the term they use to make it sound okay.

Remember this is when the real dumpster diving starts.

Who should they grab from the trash heap?

Honestly, I would take Champ Bailey, I know there was talk of him being moved to safety in Denver before his release. Added veteran leadership and understanding of offenses, his tackling is great as well. Stephen Hill, young guy, if we are in the business of taking risks why not a young 2nd round pick wr? What's the difference?

I'm just spit balling.

Would Champ Bailey just be another Ty Law?  Picking up players way past their prime isn't going to do anything positive for the Chiefs and they don't have the luxury of having first choice like last year.  I don't blame the staff for not finding top talent off the waiver wire.  It will take a while to straighten out the cap mess and grow talent through the draft.  If the drafts prove poor, then is the time to come down of Dorsey and Reid.

I think Bailey is better than Law was at this point.

I bet Champ ends up back in NO after game 1. There's some sort of provision that makes a salary guaranteed if the player is on the roster week 1.

Oh well...I was just thinking about it. To me, I'd rather take a chance in a veteran than a rookie or unknown player. I guess we do have a decent mix if veteran/young talent on defense though.

Fuckin Chiefs....it's always something with them.

You only report bad news... or good news you think is bad.

Just kidding.

I just know Kurt Coleman from my Philly friends.  They couldn't stand him.  The only reason he's here is Reid knows him.  I'm the total opposite of Mr Ev.  I had rather take a chance on unproven players than settle for proven poop.

It's nice that many are giving Reid & Dorsey a free pass for failing to improve this roster post-cut down day.  Weren't some of you the same ones who banked on Dorsey's savant-like ability to pull unpolished gems from other teams' garbage.  Well, where are they?

That's what I'm saying too...are they trying too hard to find these so called gems and failing to get players that can actually help us? That's how I feel..

Coleman isn't going to see a lot of time on the field. Coaches like to have "their guys" on the team. Guys like that can relay the thoughts of the coaches to the players, and provide leadership in the locker room. In other words, they rat out the guys causing trouble.

Absolutely. Thus my discontent for the Bronson cut and a few others. Hopefully it turns out well, but I'm having a hard time believing it after this offseason. I felt like the Chiefs primarily spun their tires or went backwards.

Here's my synopsis:

QB: Chiefs may have gained at backup position, and did extend Smith, but at this point it is a push. I didn't really expect anything more than that.

RB: Push, and I suspect McKnight is gone when Bowe gets back in week 2.

WR: The only way I see this as a net gain is if the Chiefs keep Hammond and Lewis on the 53 after week 1 and they do more than some guys that left. However, you look at the situation and see DAT replacing McCluster and banking on 2 UDFAs to fill in the lack of talent at the position overall. Currently I really consider this a loss given the talent at the position in the draft.

TE: This could be a net gain with the return of Kelce and Harris beginning to catch on to playing football.

OT: I was no Branden Albert fan, but I think KC went backwards. Fisher hasn't proven anything YET, although I do remain hopeful. Stephenson screwed up and got a 4 game suspension, and he was the only somewhat reliable lineman outside of Hudson returning. The depth at tackle is dismal, not quite the situation of having Stephenson as the swing like last year.

OG: The Chiefs let their best 2 guards go in the offseason and think the 71st of 75 guards (McGlynn), a backup swing tackle that hasn't shown much either (Linkebach), and a couple of 6th round picks (Fulton/Tardiff) can somehow save the day. All this with Jeff Allen already being horrendous as a starter. An already bad situation appears to be even worse going into 2014.

OC: I think the Chiefs got better here with the development of Kush and Hudson continuing to improve, but it isn't some monumental gain.

DE: I don't see anything but a push here. TJax wasn't great, but he was stout against the run. The combination of Howard and Bailey appear like they'll be able to do the same. No upgrade for a team that lacks much from position.

NT: The Chiefs may have the best in the game now, something I fully didn't expect. Vance Walker hasn't looked terrible in the spot, but he is just a guy. No net gain, but didn't expect it.

OLB: I see no net gain here either, more of a push. I didn't like the Ford pick and I think he has a LONG way to go to be an impactful contributor, more or less replace Hali. Here's to hoping the Chiefs strike gold and I'm wrong about the kid.

ILB: I see a net upgrade here, but not by much now considering the loss of Mays to injury. I think the retention of JMJ was a great move and he has improved. I think Mauga on special teams is an overlooked bonus.

CB: I can't see anything but regression here, even if temporary. The Chiefs let their best CB go in Flowers, even if he wasn't great last year and isn't All-World. The didn't really go out and get a full replacement. Sean Smith continues to look as lost as ever. Ron Parker was absolutely atrocious in pre-season and probably shouldn't have made this team. I had high hopes for rookie Gaines, but he really looked lost at times in preseason. I expected a lot more play recognition and cover abilities from him coming out. I think Chris Owens is a serviceable slot cover man, but one has to be worried that the Chiefs CB situation does not look good nor promising.

S: I don't see how there was much of an upgrade. Abdullah is likely better than Lewis, but I have to see how that plays out. Also, the late acquisition of two backups has me scratching my head given that I thought Bronson and McMillian had flashed as much as either of the acquisitions made. I fear that both this and the CB position could be revolving doors all year long. Currently I'll go with very slight upgrade.

Specialists: Succop wasn't amazing but I'm always worried about a rookie kicker. I'm not calling this one.

All of that and a you left out our brutal schedule. Growing pains to come...
