Lions to trade Matthew Stafford to Rams in blockbuster deal involving Jared Goff, picks

A pair of prime-time quarterbacks are moving to new cities.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Saturday night that Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is heading to the Los Angeles Rams in a massive blockbuster trade for QB Jared Goff and a package of picks.

Detroit will acquire Goff, a 2021 third-round pick and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 in exchange for Stafford, per Pelissero.

Pelissero also reported that multiple teams offered first-round picks in this year's draft but this deal will ultimately give both sides what they desired. He also noted that the trade cannot become official until the start of the league year on March 17.

The Rams will inherit the two years, $43 million remaining on Stafford's contract, and the Lions will carry a $17.8 million dead cap hit in 2021, per Pelissero.

In return, Detroit will inherit the four years and $106.6M remaining on Goff's contract. L.A. will carry a $22.2M dead cap hit in 2021.

Rapoport added that the Lions had more than six offers, including a few worth more than a first round pick. Detroit's decision to take on Goff's large contract ended up costing LA more.

The clock on a potential deal began ticking ever since Pelissero reported Jan. 23 that Detroit and its franchise signal-caller mutually agreed to part ways. Now, at age 32, Stafford -- the 2009 No. 1 overall pick -- will get a fresh start under coach Sean McVay in the City of Angels.

For Goff, 26, the deal comes after sketchy end to the 2020 season. Near the end of what was an up-and-down campaign, Goff suffered a broken right thumb in Week 16 that caused him to miss the season finale and begin the Rams' wild card matchup against the Seahawks as a backup to John Wolford.

Rams GM Les Snead said earlier this week that Goff "is a Ram in this moment," a sentiment that echoed the seemingly rocky foundation the former No. 1 overall pick was standing on. Rapoport reported the next day that the team expected to have an open QB competition if Goff wasn't traded. This move certainly takes that off the table.

In addition to getting a restart of his own, Goff will reunite with new Lions GM Brad Holmes whom he knows well. The former Rams director of college scouting evaluated Goff coming out of California in 2016. Alongside offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn, Goff will play a central role in the Lions' rebuild under head coach Dan Campbell.

While the date is still to be determined, the 2021 season already promises a must-see matchup with Goff and Stafford getting a chance to exact some revenge against their old teams when the Rams host the Lions at SoFi Stadium.

NFL Network's Mike Giardi confirmed, per an informed source, that the New England Patriots were among the interested teams. Giardi added that it's unclear how far it went beyond that but he surmised that, considering the price, it's hard to imagine the Pats stayed in for long.

Despite dealing with numerous nagging injuries, Stafford finished the year with 4,084 yards, his most since 2017, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He departs Detroit with a bevy of franchise records in his name, including most career passing yards (41,025), highest career completion percentage (62.48%) and most career passing touchdowns (256). The one-time Pro Bowler and 2011 Comeback Player of the Year posted a 74-90-1 record in 165 starts.

Goff recorded 18,171 yards, 107 TD and 55 INT in five seasons with L.A. His best year came in 2018 -- the second of his two Pro Bowl selections -- when he logged a career-high 4,688 yards en route to leading the 13-3 Rams to a Super Bowl LII showdown against the Patriots. He is 42-27 in his 69 career starts.

Wonder what this does to the asking price for Deshaun Watson...

I'm not sure raises it significantly  for now.. Rams are in a win now mode..whomever Watson goes to IF he goes might have a bigger window..of course Watson has to ok the trade as well ..not soo sure if that was part of Strafford's contract or not

time will tell

I'm wondering if they would give up less picks if Goff wasn't involved in the trade.

I’m thinking no matter what Goff had to be included in the trade, thus the Rams having to pay up more.  I saw that the Skins offer was reported to be even better than Rams so who knows lol

I’d think 3 1st isn’t out of the question if not 4.  Sooooooooo glade we have Mahomes and don’t have to deal with this crap at this position anymore lol

According to the Houston Chronicle, Houston is seeking two first-round picks, two second-round picks and two young defensive players for their 25-year-old star.

For context, ESPN reported Saturday night the Detroit Lions are set to receive two first-round picks, a third-round pick and Jared Goff from the Los Angeles Rams for Matthew Stafford. If Detroit can get that package for a big-arm, 32-year-old quarterback who has played through a lot of injuries during his career, then the Texans are in the right to be asking for a lot for Watson

if that is the case then they must have at least asked Goff which city he preferred, because why wouldn't you go to the highest bidder?

The Rams are a sinking ship.  Stafford is marginally better than Goff, and the Rams haven't had a first round pick since 2016.  Whoever is calling the shots for that franchise shouldn't have a job.  This is an  awful trade by the Rams.

stafford is miles ahead of goff

the rams will be awesome with their defense... but they're betting on the short term... they just gave away the barn long term

According to Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston, the New England Patriots were the one and only team on Stafford’s no-trade list. The Patriots were reported to be the frontrunners to land Stafford in a trade, but they, according to Curran, were the only team he didn’t want to play for, and the only team he wouldn’t accept as a trade destination.

rams had to do this to get out of Goff contract. Its sucks to give up all those picks but you have to  take some losses for moving on from him and that contract and having a willing buyer. If they are competitive with Stafford there than the first round picks will be at the bottom of the round. They also get quite a few 3 rd picks for players lost and coaches.

The key for the rams will be hitting on those mid round picks.

Stafford isn't Mahomes.  He's not going to make them a Super Bowl team next year.  That franchise has issues, and they continually give away draft picks.  Last year before the Super Bowl I said the Rams were 2-3 seasons from being 6-10,  and I stand by that, because they are being so badly managed.  It's not that I'm against trading draft picks, it's that when you go 7 years without a first round pick, you aren't giving your franchise a chance at sustainability.  That's especially bad in LA.  If the Chiefs throw out some 6 win seasons, people will still go to the games, if the Rams do it, (when the Rams do it), no one in LA is going to give a damn about the Rams.

Wow. Because of his former coach being from that system maybe?

I also don't like this trade. I think Stafford is really good and this could work out for the Rams if he stays healthy, but they're taking a big risk, like they always do.
