Pretty sure the Raiders won the OT toss and the Chiefs kicked it out of bounds, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.  I do remember walking out of Arrowhead all bummed out.

As I remember it, you're right, but I'm not 100% sure and nothing at that link confirmed it.

If they're tied after 60 min, how does it make sense to leave it up to the flip of a coin

it's stupid

each team gets a possession until one team has the higher score

pretty simple... in that regard college got it right

how they go about it the issue

no matter what they do, folks will complain

but each team needs a chance... sudden death is bullshit

Rewatched the last few minutes.  Now I remember why we were so bummed.  Dozens of misses opportunities.  The Chiefs kickoff specialist kicked a total of THREE out of bounds kickoffs.  Cost the Chiefs a playoff spot with missed kicks, bad calls, defense breakdowns, of funny officiating.  1995 all over again.

It was Tamarick Vanover against the Chargers on MNF.

But can you think of any others?  It is super rare.  So agree to disagree on the rest, I guess.  I actually like that the college format is really head-to-head and games aren't decided on flukey plays for the most part.  The downside is that it can drag on a little bit, but some of those games are really exciting and who doesn't want more football?  The only issue to me is the beating these guys take over the course of a season.

I've always questioned the angle of overtime being so detrimental to players bodies.  Let's say a 10 play scoring drive runs 6 minutes off the field.  If you have a 10 minute timed overtime quarter, how much additional abuse are you actually adding to a player?  10-12 snaps?  Is that really earth shattering?  I mean a 10 minute quarter is probably going to be 25-30 plays, including special teams?  QB and offensive line are the only players that aren't regularly shuffled on and off the field anyway,  so at the end of the day, is there really that much difference?   Barring some crazy outlier of a season, a team might get 3 overtime games, max, so that might be an additional 35-40 snaps for the season for an offensive linemen?  The players union and league didn't seem to have a problem with adding the 17th game.

Remember when in crucial situations the Raiders would put Tim Brown in as the punt returner?  Chiefs have done it with Hill.  While those plays might be deemed flukey, I have an appreciation for teams who invest in special teams and try to get it right.  For years the Chiefs had weapons like Dante Hall and Vanover.  The college format eliminates weapons and rewards teams that neglect special teams.  I mean, would a Dante Hall kick return to midfield not be considered head to head?  Or, if your kicker sucks and kicks off out of bounds and the other team gets the ball at the 40.  These are crucial plays that happen over the course of a game that the college game eliminates at the end.  Wanna see a kicker attempt a 55 yard field goal in the clutch?  Not in college, unless the offense decides to take a huge yardage loss, as they're starting so close anyway that if they don't gain a single yard they're attempting a 48 yard fg, which at the nfl level is probably 85-90% a make.
