Sounds good but what does this push down the road?

Yeah, the Steelers kicked the Big Ben can down the road as far as they could and now they are screwed.  Sooner or later you gotta face the reaper.   But with the  unusual cap this year, this is probably a good time to play this card.

His contract was set up to allow this.  Thats why its great it's so long.  Spreads the 17 mil over 5 years if they max it out and do it as a bonus.  This is only a problem if you want to get rid of the player.

So essentially it raises his guarantee 3.4 mil  for the next 5 years?

Not really a problem as Mahomes won't be playing with a single contract for 10 years. He'll likely see some restructures and extensions on the way. Since he got no signing bonus the new setup is more like a standard NFL contract. Just adds $3.4 million for the next 5 years and that's it. Makes a lot of sense when the cap goes down.

Also Mahomes likely wants to survive the next decade and freeing up cap space is critical for that.

I expected HB to get the extension before anything else as his cap hit is insane and only has a year left that Veach wants to extend.

This buys the Chiefs more time to extend HB and revise other contracts.  If they want to be players in the first tier of FAs, which might not happen, they had to be in position by 3/17.  This gives them room to deal if they find the right piece.  OC from GB, anyone?

That would be my preference.  And then a 2nd tier LT on a shorter deal depending on how they feel about the rookie crop.

It should be noted that after releasing the tackles KC could pretty easily clear even more room than the 30 mil we thought they could.  Could clear 40-45+ mil pretty easily at this point.

he has no long term guarantee money.. his contract for the next year becomes gauranteed at the begining of that years league year..

all they have done, is turn a roster bonus into a signing bonus.

There is no new money, nothing to see here except if we cut him in the next 5 years.. it will count agains the cap for a couple of million or so.

I see people crying the Cap is a myth and while there are many ways to massage and be creative within the cap there is definitely a cap and it will eventually get you if you screw with it to much or you miss on a few players to whom you give big contracts.   Restructuring a players salary to a bonus adds money to each year remaining on their contract so 3.4 million a year for the next year 4-5 years for Mahome doesn't sound like a lot but if you do that 5 times this year then you've added 15 million to the cap for the next 4-5 years.   Doing that with elite players isn't an issue but if you miss or that player drops off then you are stuck.   I know people think Mickey Loomis is a brilliant with the cap but eventually it will catch up if the cap doesn't sky rocket and even if it does a team like the Saints are overpaying for avg talent because the market will adjust and they won't be able to pay players what the new and increased cap dictates.    I don't like kicking the can down the road but this is one offseason I am ok with it as long as the draft adds players that will contribute this season and future seasons.   If Veach whiffs again like he did in 2018 and somewhat in 2019  on the draft then we will be in trouble in a couple of years.   Thankfully he has found some udfa gems and some shrewd FA moves that have compensated for those drafts.

One thing is certain that Mahomes is already a bargain as he is the best qb in the NFL and by the end of the first 5 years could be paid like the 10th best qb.

NOW who is Veach targeting with all this cap room?  Can't just be making room to make room

sure he can ..why not? Patience is a virtue says the old bull to the young bull. Wait for the madness of the  first few days to end and see who  is left over that will take a realistic deal.
