Report: Chiefs sign former Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross

A spinal injury kept the one-time Day 1 or Day 2 prospect off of many teams’ draft boards.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a bit of a splash undrafted free agent signing on Monday, as they came to terms with former Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross. Boardroom’s Jordan Schultz had the news on his official Twitter account.

Ross, 22, stands at 6 feet 4 and 205 pounds. His best collegiate year was his freshman season in 2018, when he had 46 catches for 1,000 yards, including 153 yards and a touchdown in Clemson’s national title win over Alabama. Ross caught 66 passes for 865 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019 before missing all of 2020 after surgery to repair a congenital spinal fusion condition.

Ross compiled 46 catches for 514 yards and three touchdowns in his return season in 2020, but he was limited to 10 games after needing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the surgical procedure on Ross’ spine had him off of many teams’ draft boards, though he was once considered a Day 1 or Day 2 prospect. The Chiefs usually keep five or six receivers on their roster, and we already know that four of the spots are likely to go to Mecole Hardman, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and rookie Skyy Moore. Ross enters a healthy competition with the likes of Josh Gordon, Daurice Fountain, Corey Coleman and others for the final two spots.

“Once a team gets me, they’re going to get everything out of me,” said Ross to ESPN last fall.

That team is the Chiefs.

Mecole better step his game up REAL quick...he could find himself buried on the depth chart and that's not good for someone in their contract year.

Is Ross ready to practice and play this year?  I thought he was still dealing with his medical stuff, but guess I really don't know.

He stated at Clemson's pro day (which he was a participant at) that he was 100%

Don't forget my boy Deron Cherry. He joined KC as a punter, then was cut, and later signed a a safety. The rest is history.

I am calling it now:  I think this kid has real talent.  He gets hurt, then has to deal with the 2020 fiasco of a season.  After that Trevor Lawrence is gone to the pros so he doesn’t have the best QB throwing to him.

He has talent & now has PM15 throwing him passes with Andy as his coach.  Don’t be surprised if this kid kicks ass when given the opportunity.

This makes me very happy.  I posted his story in the draft forum a while back.  Man I hope he can be healthy and get back to what he was.

I like it as well.  He may get a redshirt year if they decide to stash him on IR, similar to Herring.  Anxious to see if he can win a spot also.

First of all I hope he's over the spinal issue, that's tough for anyone let alone a young man trying to build a life.

In our perspective it's a once-decent prospect for literally zero cap spending, nothing but a plus and if he can mount to something will be a decent option to have around. I don't think he challenges anyone currently on the roster though, seems more like a candidate for the PS or the IR depending on his current health.

He should absolutely challenge Gordon and Fountain for our 5th WR spot.

Is Powell now a failure? Have not heard anything about him.

What are you expecting to hear? There hasn’t been any practices yet. I bet he will be at rookie mini camp. Then you might hear something.
