Wasn't there a game where the offense didn't want to score and the defense drug the ball carrier across the goal line to get the ball back quicker?  Not sure what the rule is about giving oneself up before contact by the defense.

Yes but don't remember which game.  And the rule is if you give yourself up ball is dead where u go down.

The point being what if the defenders don't let you go down?  Doesn't apply to the McKinnon case, but defense could drag a RB near the LOS and pull him across the goal line.
