Chiefs to host Pittsburgh DE Deslin Alexandre on top-30 visit

A fifth-year senior in 2022, the 6-foot-4 and 285-pound Alexandre recorded 131 total tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, seven passes batted, two fumbles recoveries, an interception and a safety during his five seasons at Pitt.

During a top-30 visit, prospects will have a chance to tour team facilities and meet with position coaches, front office executives and scouts. On occasion, they’ll get a chance to meet with a few players who are working at the team facility. Some guys the team will bring in to get more medical information. Other guys will be brought in so teams can get an idea of whether they’ll fit the team culture.

I'd say later.  Older prospect.  He's not real sure what he's doing.  Love the motor though.  He certainly has potential.

So do teams use one of their 30s on day three picks?  Not sure how that works or what the strategy is for allotting the visits.  Age for a four year contract doesn't seem too important unless the rookie is a 26+ y.o.  This guy just seems a little far down the list to change the pass rush much.

Usually you'll use em for more med info or just if you're trying to figure something out.

Chiefs to host Western Kentucky DT Brodric Martin on top-30 visit

According to The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler, Western Kentucky’s Brodric Martin has a top-30 visit scheduled with the Chiefs (and also another with their Super Bowl LVII opponent the Philadelphia Eagles). Weighing in at 6-foot-4 and 334 pounds at the East-West Shrine Bowl, this hulking defensive tackle prospect is a handful in the trenches. He’s practically immovable in the interior run game, but don’t get it twisted, he has some range to chase down ball carriers too. His 34-inch arms are big for an interior defender and give him an advantage against some of the smaller, squatty interior linemen that he’ll face in the NFL.

As a fifth-year senior in 2022, Martin posted a solid season with the Hilltoppers. The name of his game will always be run-stopping, but he finished the year with 31 total tackles, two tackles for loss, 15 stops, two sacks and 22 pressures on the year.

Chiefs to host Stephen F. Austin EDGE BJ Thompson on top-30 visit

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to bring players in for top-30 visits, this time hosting a standout from the East-West Shrine Bowl.

According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Chiefs are one of two teams (along with the Detroit Lions) hosting Stephen F. Austin EDGE BJ Thompson on a top-30 visit

Thompson, who is listed at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds with 34-inch arms, is expected to perform extremely well at his pro day on March 21. He suggests that the edge rusher boasts 4.4 speed, a 40-inch vertical, and a 135-inch broad jump. Those would rival the athletic testing of Georgia EDGE Nolan Smith,

Watching his tape, Thompson is much more of a threat to win with speed off the edge than he is with power. His first step is explosive, which was showcased in the East-West Shrine Bowl when he recorded four total tackles, 1.5 sacks, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits.

Can he set the edge?  That's a big deal for any team but especially for Spags.  A DE with that much speed could be a nightmare for OTs if he knows how to exploit it.  Day three prospect.

Chiefs to host UNM Lobos S Jerrick Reed II on top 30 visit

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, the Chiefs are scheduled to have New Mexico S Jerrick Reed II in on a top-30 visit. A First Team All-Mountain West Conference selection back in 2020, Reed became the first Lobos defensive back to earn a First-Team All-Conference selection since Glover Quin back in 2008.

Reed has developed the reputation of a ballhawk during his college career. He has centerfield range, but he’s also not afraid to come down and make a tackle in run support. Listed at 5-foot-10 and 192 pounds, Reed has 266 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, seven interceptions, 21 passes defended and one defensive touchdown since 2019. His pro day workout showed that he’s a tremendous athlete, on par with the best invited to the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.

Reed had an outstanding Pro Day 40: 4.46 (Tied for 3rd among S at combine) Bench: 18 reps VJ: 38” (👀👀 5th at combine) Broad: 10-2 (8th at combine) 3C: 7.16 SS: 4.31

We've met with him before too.  I keep mocking him to us on the sites.  Like him for a day 3 nose.

I'm wondering if Spags has been on the lookout for some lighter ends.  Last 2 years we've been talking to quite a few lighter guys in pre draft.

Free agency acquisitions give KC Chiefs newfound flexibility on defense

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a dent in their priority list this offseason, acquiring several new players in the first week of free agency and securing a few of their own free agents as well. At a glance, the Chiefs are poised to make a run at their eighth consecutive division title, and while many key pieces are set to return in 2023, some of last week’s transactions seem to indicate the possibility that the team could be preparing to make a major change in its base defense.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has always employed a 4-3 base defense in his tenure in the league. It’s a long-term staple of his philosophy. Though the Chiefs have found success with Spagnuolo, going to three Super Bowls in his four seasons at the helm of the defense, there are reasons to believe that the Chiefs could be making a shift in philosophy.

Let’s begin with last week’s player acquisitions within the front seven. After free agency began on March 13, the Chiefs brought in veterans Charles Omenihu and Drue Tranquill, two new starters for their front seven.

One of the most exciting parts about Omenihu and Tranquill is the level of versatility that each one brings.

Omenihu, the former Texas Longhorn, has played all over the defensive line in his career, including a healthy balance along the 49ers’ front in 2022.

Tranquill, an athletic coverage linebacker, brings an equal level of versatility, displaying elite coverage skills in his tenure with the Chargers while also making the most of his opportunities to rush the quarterback. In 70 pass-rush reps, Tranquill racked up 15 pressures and 5 sacks in 2022. The 27-year-old Tranquill led the Chargers with 146 tackles last season, good for 12th in the entire league.

When considering a change in philosophy, one must also consider the rest of the coaching staff. In 2022, the Chiefs moved defensive line coach Brendan Daly to coach the linebackers after Matt House left the team for the college ranks. To fill the hole left by Daly, the team brought in former Ravens and Jaguars assistant Joe Cullen. The 55-year-old Cullen arrived with many years of experience coaching a 3-4 defense, and while Kansas City did not employ the 3-4 in 2022, it’s possible that Cullen’s influence on Spagnuolo has steered the team in that direction.

The defense should be structured around the strengths of interior defensive lineman Chris Jones. The perennial All-Pro has played the last four years of his career in Spagnuolo’s 4-3 as an end or tackle, but also has three years under Bob Sutton as a 3-4 defensive end. If the Chiefs make a shift to a 3-4, they can utilize Omenihu, Mike Danna, the recently re-signed Tershawn Wharton, and 2022 first-rounder George Karlaftis as an end on the other side. Tranquill can join Nick Bolton as off-ball linebackers in the 3-4. Perhaps the biggest hiccup is whether Willie Gay could combine with Karlaftis or Leo Chenal as outside linebackers in this package. Both Gay and Chenal have the athleticism to do it if asked to do so.

We can debate whether this is wise, but the key element here is that the Chiefs have the parts available to them to try whatever they want and are not pigeonholed into certain packages due to the inflexibility of the key parts of their depth chart. The defense is flush with players who have experience doing a lot of different things, and they can capitalize on that by making themselves unpredictable in specific scenarios.

So essentially, they have the personnel to switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4... mid game. That would be kind of a hoot. That said, I don't know what to think about the idea of Karlaftis and Gay on the bench. Probably why I ain't a coach.

Well they can mix and match defensive packages and make the offense guess what is coming. As stated in the article many can play different roles.
