Overall Post Draft Feeling....

Good draft. Don't feel as strongly about this year's group compared to last but truthfully only time will tell how good these picks were. The DT Coburn out of Texas is my favorite pick but I think FAU and Rice both will have solid impact this season.

I love the depth we are building. I wanted some fireworks draft weekend and they never came. But that doesn't mean it wasn't productive.

One thing I think needs to be highlighted is how much more athletic the Chiefs have gotten at OT. Really twitchy, bendy guys gave Brown fits because he was so big and lacked some athleticism. And everyone gives Wylie fits because he's fucking terrible at football. We will be improved in this area regardless of who starts where at OT.

This is probably the deepest and most talented roster we've had under Reid/Veach. And there's still legit talent out there in free agency too.

Not exactly jazzed, but I get it.
Great teams that stay great all have depth. Nothing sexy, but Veach is looking long term.

Years from now this draft is likely to look far better than it does today.

Yep. Or, it could look pretty good come December after most of a season.

Like the first 4 picks a lot.  They were all players I really liked coming in.

Love that they got guys who can play and didn't reach too hard for the 3 needs we all thought we had to get.  I love the order they took them in as well as that's where the value was.

I feel like we passed up some talented players on day 3 though tbh, except Coburn was outstanding value and a great pick where we got him.  He's ready to contribute immediately as a 2 down guy and could develop as a pass rusher.

Not sure the 7th rounder makes the roster.  B.J. Thompson not so sure about either.  He'll have to show up on ST.  They may keep him on roster as a pass rush specialist but he's not that close to being a 3 down player to me.  There were some good players that could have made our roster taken after him.

In Veach we trust.  He does know how to build a roster and he's aggressive, even if they do sometimes get too cute in the draft.

and I was surprised  when they showed 64% of rosters are day 3 picks it's almost as if  success on Day 3  is as much or more important than Day 1 &2 but then success on all 3 days is quite the accomplishment. Time will tell.

On a side note I see where Percy Snow is often included on the Draft Bust list and I for one take exception to that as  an injury was his demise. What he did riding that scooter altho not very smart was not doing something that others didn't do as well at that time..just plain bad luck but not worthy as a Bust label...JMO

Solid B. We addressed areas of need or concern. Created depth and competition all the while playing it out for long term

Those we can't extend next year, we have players that will get a years experience and let us know who we need to sign for sure or draft again/FA next year.

The more I read about these kids and watch more videos, I am really happy with this draft.  I think Connor will surprise some people, Coburn will be a stud, and BJT may surprise some people after a little development.  I'm psyched to see how training camp plays out!  And I still believe there will be a splash signing in FA before the start of camp.

BJT I think will surprise many if us. DT was only 235 pounds coming out as a comparison.  If he puts weight in he will be a good 3 down DE. If not, use him on the outside and kick Omenihu inside.

He can play like an OLB while we get the other DEs I George and FAU in too? A lot of ways to keep them fresh and in obvious passing situations. One thing we know, when a team gets behind us, they pass to catch up.

They drafted guys in areas of need. That is about all anyone can know. So they did what they needed and it is good in that regard.

As to whether it works, who knows? Talk again in a couple of years.

I’d love to see someone, unless it already exists, grade all the Mel Kipers of the world to compare their draft pick analysis relative to reality after five years and see if the experts are even any good.

That's what happens when you draft for need instead of BPA. I mean we could have had Will Levis... and made Collinsworth a happy feller.

True, it wasn't that he didn't have talent... but a 1st round pick that never pays is a bust no matter the reason. It's a wasted pick.

Chiefs Wire

Chiefs earn ‘A-‘ grade from Touchdown Wire for 2023 NFL draft class

Our friend Doug Farrar over at Touchdown Wire provided grades for all 32 NFL teams. After landing a dynamo draft class a year ago, Farrar thinks that Brett Veach might have followed it up with a similarly successful draft class. He even thinks it could be a “re-run” from 2022 and gave the team an “A-” grade.

Take a look at some of what he had to say down below:

The defending Super Bowl champs started out with a bang getting Felix Anudike-Uzomah with their first pick. Anudike-Uzomah had eight sacks and 46 total pressures last season for the Wildcats, and he’s exactly the kind of speed-to-power pass-rusher defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo prefers. Rashee Rice fits right in as the speed receiver who Patrick Mahomes can hit downfield — he caught 18 passes of 20 or more air yards on 40 targets last season for 566 yards and four touchdowns. Wanya Morris was Anton Harrison’s bookend for the Sooners, and he might be able to fit in at right tackle here sooner than later. If there’s a steal here, it’s Keondre Coburn in the sixth round. He’s a 6-foot-2, 332-pound tackle who can plug up run lanes and get after the quarterback, aligning him with another Spagnuolo preference.

The first three picks for Kansas City all have the potential to become immediate impact players with the Chiefs. It also appears that the team landed some steals during Day 3, just as they did a season ago. The full impact of the draft class might not be realized until the team finds itself lifting the Lombardi Trophy once again.

First 3 picks immediate starters, day 3 picks getting some steals.

Not sure why the A 'minus' because... what's a SB champ supposed to do? We literally had the last pick in the first three rounds, and had to trade up in the second.

Draft grade for the quality of players acquired:  B

Draft grade for filling current and future needs for a team drafting last in every round:  A

Ryan Tracy pointed out that EVERY player the Chiefs drafted has upside.  No finished products here.  Some of the head scratchers make sense when one considers who will become FAs in another year or so.  Give Veach credit for not being pressured into moving up at extreme cost in the first round.  I still question why they gave so much to get Rice, but they saw a fit and went for it.  After that, every pick had a purpose for the long term and the Coburn pick really has me excited.  Could be a starter as soon as Nnadi leaves if not before.  And Veach filled the mantra of drafting a DB and WR in every draft year.
