Chiefs' Andy Reid says NFL could turn into 'flag football' as rule changes continue to come

The new kickoff rule has Reid questioning if the NFL's player safety initiative will go too far

The NFL’s newest change to kickoffs is not sitting well with future Hall of Fame head coach Andy Reid.

Reid, who has led the Kansas City Chiefs to two Super Bowl wins in the last four seasons, is a fan of special teams. While he is all about player safety, he sees this rule, which will allow teams to fair-catch kickoffs and safety kicks and spot them at the 25-yard line, as a pathway toward "flag football."

"My thing is, where does it stop, right?" Reid told NFL Network. "We start taking pieces and we’ll see how this goes. But you don’t want to take too many pieces away, or you’ll be playing flag football."

I agree. Its already getting bad but this is taking it too far.

not sure if anyone watched the XFL but they had an interesting KO rule and it seemed like the returner usually got to the 25 but the impacts were less ferocious

How many times will the kickoff come down short of the goal line and the receiver elect not to return it but rather make a fair catch?  Of those instances, if he elects to return it, how many times will an injury result?  A few times per season?  They're solving a problem that doesn't exist IMHO.

per KKuen in the NFL forum

"I read last year there were 19 concussions on the kickoffs in the NFL. Only 1 of them involved the kick returner."

A solution in search of a problem.
