He is still getting paid here.

I'm a little vague on that.  Is he actually getting paid, or is it just a dead cap hit because of spreading the signing bonus that he received a couple years ago against several years of cap space?

I know that he has a dead cap.  But isn't that money he already received several years ago?

No. This is what we are paying him for cutting him this year. We saved 21 million of the 29 million by cutting him. Essentially he is getting paid more by us this year than the broncos gave him this year to play against us.

It's prorated signing bonus so we already paid it in prior years

Still counted on the cap, though, right? (I don't fully understand how the cap works regarding dead cap.)

I think basically if you get a 20 million signing bonus on a 4 year contract, you get the money up front, but the team gets to count 5 million a year against the cap instead of 20 million all in year 1.  So the remaining signing bonus and guaranteed money not yet earned is basically a persons dead cap number.

So we're not 'paying him to play elsewhere' like the Yankees did with Dave Justice sending him to the A's years ago.

Damn. That would have given me more ammo to give him shit.

So, from what you are saying, only the portion not already paid "up front" (as yearly installments) counts against this year's cap, since most of it was paid in previous installments.  But we still have to count the remainder of that bonus not already paid against this year's cap? That makes sense and explains the term "dead money" since we have to count it but not really be able to put it to use in any way.

No.  The entire bonus was paid up front.   But expensed against the cap over the life of the contract. Since the contract didn't go the distance,  the part of the bonus that was paid but not yet expensed is charged to this year.

Yeah.  That's what I thought you wrote. I understood apparently.  Thanks for the info.

Broncos coach Sean Payton confirms Frank Clark will play OLB, not DE

Frank Clark spent the first eight years of his career playing as a 4-3 defensive end, first with the Seattle Seahawks (2015-2018) and then with the Kansas City Chiefs (2019-2022).

After the pass rusher signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos, some fans and pundits speculated that Clark would remain a defensive end (as opposed to transitioning to outside linebacker in the team’s 3-4 defense).

When the Broncos wrapped up minicamp last week, coach Sean Payton confirmed that Clark will play OLB, not DE, in Denver.

“He’s an OLB,” Payton said. “He’s an edge player.”

In their base defense, the Broncos have OLBs line up on the edge with DEs lining up as interior defensive linemen.

Of course, these position names could prove to be semantics given that Clark — and many of the team’s defenders — are versatile players who can line up at various spots. Even as an OLB, Clark could spend time at a traditional 3-4 DE spot. The Broncos will have the personnel to get creative with their pass rush this year.
