Details coming in and an interesting structure on the CJ rework.  The new bonuses are being treated as option bonuses and 4 void years were added at the end.  So since they're option bonuses added in season,  they're all treated as NLTBE bonuses and put on subsequent voided cap years.  If not earned they're refunded to the cap. If earned, cap hit can be spread out on the void years.  If they tag or he hits FA they would accelerate into 2024 for the ones earned.  Some of those bonuses he is unlikely to hit.  Smart job by Chiefs brass.

I think this is what they mean when they talk about "creative financing."

none of that makes any sense to me but like KK said..If CJ thinks he got a good deal then it's a good deal

I agree, just don't understand how he thinks he got a good deal. I guess he's betting on himself.

According to the good folks at Over the Cap, the Chiefs tacked on the incentives as an option bonus with four void years in order to avoid paying for the incentives in 2023.

This move keeps Jones' cap hit at $26.8M for the 2023 NFL season, leaving the Chiefs with around $180K in 2023 after the Joe Thuney restructure.

With the void years, it looks as if Jones carries $1.35M toward the cap in 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027. Those years will automatically void on a certain date. However, the cap hits could be lower depending on the Jones' earned incentives this season.

There's also another catch.

If Jones becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2024, all of that incentive money earned in 2023 would be accelerated against the 2024 salary cap. That would also be the case if the Chiefs use the franchise tag on Jones.

If Jones were to sign a new extension prior to the 2024 void year kicking in, the Chiefs would be able to spread the remainder of Jones' earned incentive cap hits over the life of the new deal.

Chiefs' cap issues make tag for Chris Jones unlikely, sources say

Little over 203.5m in obligations even if CJ hits all NLTBE incentives.  Not sure how that equates to up against the cap.  If the cap goes up as expected, that puts us around 40m under.

Where’s the Chris Jones incentive tracker Topic? He needs to walk on water, turn water into wine and give eyesight to the blind to make back his lost revenue during his holdout.

He can probably meet some of these incentives but to really make any extra money he’d have to have a miraculous year. Good job chiefs brass.

I'm including next year since they'll want extensions and that's the cap space you mentioned.

No it's not.  When Bolton, Humphrey and Smith are up f9r contract it's closer to 140m in cap space pre mahomes contract reshuffle and whatever we do next year.  Chiefs are in shape to resign who they want.
