KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs are releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, saving the team $12 million against their salary cap, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Wednesday.

Valdes-Scantling played two seasons with the Chiefs after signing as a free agent from the Green Bay Packers. He caught 42 passes in 2022 and 21 last season but often had his biggest moments in the playoffs.

He caught 8 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown in the AFC Championship Game victory over the Cincinnati Bengals after the 2022 season.

Last season he caught a pass to secure the Chiefs' AFC Championship Game win over the Baltimore Ravens and had the Chiefs' first touchdown in their Super Bowl LVIII victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Valdes-Scantling was fifth on the Chiefs in the regular season in receptions in 2023. Rookie Rashee Rice was their leader at the position with 79 catches.

Yeah saw this coming. He had his absolute worst statistical season last year and was scheduled to make 14 mil this year. Chiefs save 12 million. He's also going to be 30 in October. Thanks MVS.
He's got two Super Bowl rings. Wouldn't have had that in Green Bay. Good luck to him in the future.

MVS was a little like Frank Clark.  Really frustrating and then comes up big in big moments.  Veach has mostly done great things, but Toney and MVS are not those things.  Hopefully we can use those dollars to find a legit NFL receiver.  Thanks MVS, who knows how we would have fared without you.

MVS isn't going to get a super deal with other teams.  Is there a chance he'll resign with the Chiefs for a few million just to stay in the game?   KC wouldn't have won the AFCCG after the 2022 season if MVS hadn't shown up.  Same with Toney.  Can't hate on them for failures at other times.

Would rather just hit the draft for new receivers.

They could hit "the bargain basement" for a 30ish Vet that can come in and contribute.  Rashee Rice is an exception in coming in and picking up the offense and being effective so quickly.  Skyy more hype in St. Joe is not enough.

I don’t hate MVS. Really. But You can’t pay a guy 14 million dollars per year who puts up 21 receptions for 315 yards and 1 TD in the regular season. I understand he’s made big plays in the postseason, obviously, but that’s untenable. There’s got to be someone else out there. Don’t care where he comes from. For 14 mil per year he’s got to be 60 plus 900 yards plus 7 touchdowns plus kinda guy who also makes big plays in the playoffs.

MVS was never going to get that third year from the day he signed, no matter what numbers he put up.  That contract was a 2 year deal from the get go.  Appreciate what he's done, no hard feelings, but moving in a different direction was the plan a long time ago.  He made good money and got 2 rings.

I'd wager that he ends up on a 1 year prove it deal somewhere, for like 6-7 million.

Tell him to speak to Frank Clark about this

Never said Clark wasn't overpaid.  The point remains that the Chiefs wouldn't have won SB LIV and LVII without him or someone else equally effective in the post season.  Same with MVS.  Certainly overpaid for what he brought, but in last year's AFCCG, he was about the only WR left standing and he performed very well.  Guess the bottom line is to not get so desperate at any position that one has to give a overgenerous contract to fill the need.  But if those contracts were killing the team, how did they end up with three Lombardi Trophies?

To be honest the Chiefs actually did him a favor by releasing him at the outset before Free Agency. On the surface, to his potential landing spots; he’s a two time Super Bowl champion who gained Mahomes trust in big game situations and delivered big time. But to the Chiefs he’s a 12 million dollar cap increase with 2 million in dead cap space and with that money they can franchise tag Sneed and try and retain Chris Jones and others. Chiefs did him a solid to be honest..

I'd vote for both.  Newly drafted receivers don't often have an early impact in Reid system.

I can only name two wideouts drafted by Andy Reid that had a first season impact, Deshaun Jackson and Rashee Rice.

Does anyone like any of the top ten free agents?

That was not my point.  Tell Him to talk to Frank to see if he had wished he would have taken less to still play for the Chiefs last year after being cut.

Okay, see what you're saying.  It seems that taking a discount to get a ring or even stay with your teammates is a myth especially if the player already has a ring.  Does Hill regret taking the money?  Don't know, but if he had to do it all over again, here's betting he would grab the $$$ every time.

Hill was something you can't turn down in a tax free state. MVS might get 5 mil per year, something he may take a little less to be on a winning team even if just a mil less. Hill is not a good example of this as he made a hell of a lot more and in Florida where no state taxes.

MVS didn’t put up numbers to justify his cap. He made some playoff plays when it mattered. But regular season was not someone to rely on. Very Frank Clark like.

Hill also wanted to be the pure #1 option in Miami. He was in a timeshare with Kelce. He has been that guy. I don’t think we’d be talking about Hill so much if he didn’t take shots at KC after leaving. After the crap he did in college and maybe a few years ago, he’d do better if he just shut his mouth and be thankful Andy and KC provided him opportunities.

I'm not arguing for either MVS or Clark, but at this point in Chiefs history, making the playoffs is nearly a given.  Performance in the playoffs is what we are all waiting for.  That's not saying the regular season isn't important.  Many of those games are just as entertaining and exciting as playoff games, but unless the team collapses or a major series of injuries set in, the playoffs are how the Chiefs will be judged.   Losing six games was considered a down year............until the playoffs.

Maclin wasn’t bad his first season but overall you’re right rookie WRs don’t typically do well the first season under Reid.

Will admit dunno if they are a fit within the system but 2 that I think could come in and do well are Tyler Boyd or Curtis Samuel.  Samuel played with Washington last year with EB as OC so wouldn’t take much for him to know the system.
