I'm sticking with Alex Smith

There has to be a reason why the Chiefs are hanging onto Tyler Bray. Whether he is the answer or not, they could have settled with him, and sent him packing when he hurt his knee playing basketball. Bray, Murray, and Daniel aren't too bad. Daniel will probably move on next year, but we thought the same last year.

This season's playoffs and next season will go towards whether Smith finishes out his contract with the team. He has to play well and have some post-season success. Winning a playoffs game would likely help things, but next season, even more would be expected, if not already. This streak has bought time, but also higher expectations. When I say, bought time, I don't mean actual playing time, as next year is guaranteed, but if we had finished this year 3-13, it would look a lot different right now. Not saying he can't do it this year. I hope he does.

Next off-season will go towards whether Bray is still the presumed 3/2 or if a new drafted guy replaces him. I think we'll draft someone this year, but it will be low enough to be competing with Murray and Bray, but not clear that he wins a spot. Murray will at least finish out his contract with us, if he's not traded or extended. I hope we can get the most from Smith and transition to Murray or someone. I know transition is NOT needed, just hoping we can get the most from who we have continuity and experience with while someone is developed.

Smith should have the opportunity here to buy time. Best way to do so is to win a ring. Do it, Smith, even if defense is a big helper, as we have him under contract (so no Flacco handcuffs). If it happens, then Smith's current contract was not to avoid his free agency this year, but rather to buy time for Dorsey to not be desperate. (Contract wasn't desperate, as the guarantee just goes to next season.) Dorsey, keep your eyes open even if Smith wins one, but hopefully Smith wins and gives us a good position not to reach and to fully develop whomever is next. Trade Murray if they want, but not if he's the next guy. I think Dorsey and Reid are meritorious, so it would bode well if Smith finished his contract with us, given the expanding salary cap.

Alex Smith is under contract throughout the 2018 season. The deal struck by John Dorsey is looking better in hind sight.

Some people don't think it's worth it. I respect that opinion. But when people say it was breaking the bank? Pshh. It's 15th in the league before Luck makes it 16th while the cap is expanding by more than we could be overpaying in the old cap. Eli Manning, I think, might get another if he already hasn't that pushes it back to 17th.

You would always like to get the best QB in the league, Smith is not that. You would also like everyone to be cheaper, including Smith, but people acted like it was a top five-ten contract. He signed before Big Ben re-upped and Tannehil and maybe Dalton, so at the time it was higher, but the agents and team knows the league's flow.

He knows the system and the Chiefs typically carry 3 QB's. Daniel ain't coming back.

If they draft a QB, Bray and Murray will battle for the last spot.

This is Bray's last season unless he shows something significant. Part of his 1.925 million contract extension is a $500,000 roster bonus next year. The Chiefs aren't going to pay 1.2 million in 2017 for a broke-dick scrub.
