Kansas City Chiefs have one CB left from the roster at this point last year

Recommended Posts

It is amazing what a difference a year can make when you have an active front office.

I'm not here to tell anybody that this version of the Kansas City Chiefs is going to win the Super Bowl come February. Maybe this group will come together and make a spirited run, shocking much of the world and most of the people reading this piece. Perhaps they will fall apart and go 3-13. Likely, they will do something in between.

General manager John Dorsey has been vocal about building for the long haul and not the short term. His words were put into action this offseason when Dorsey decided to let several free agents walk for more lucrative offers, all the while building his core through the draft. Early returns on that draft are promising with Zach Fulton, Dee Ford and De'Anthony Thomas expected to contribute significantly.

So, how different is this team from last year at this point? How much better or worse is it in Year Two of the Dorsey regime? Let's take a look at the depth chart for Week 2 of the preseason last year:

If you see things as I do (scary, I know) you probably see a roster bringing back its core sans Brandon Flowers. You also see much better depth almost across the board, but especially at

linebacker, running back and receiver.

I'm also very happy with the turnover the Chiefs have had at corner. While the team has taken a hit without Flowers, I am pleased to see Dorsey being so aggressive with the turnover. Of the nine corners listed above, ONE remains on the roster. Dorsey has been very diligent in looking for answers, and that makes me believe he will find one soon if he hasn't already with Ron Parker, Phillip Gaines and Marcus Cooper.

The Chiefs have obvious holes at receiver, but again look at the turnover. Above, 12 receivers are listed and only Bowe, Hemingway, Avery and Hammond Jr. have returned. It showed that Dorsey is dedicated to fixing the problem without simply throwing money around at a quick fix. He wants to get the right players into Kansas City and will turn over every rock, for better or worse.

Other positions also show dramatic improvements. Instead of having Edgar Jones and Zac Diles as primary backups at linebacker, the Chiefs now possess youngsters in James-Michael Johnson and Dee Ford. At running back. Kansas City showcases De'Anthony Thomas over Shaun Draughn.

With as many as 11-12 draft picks in the 2015 NFL Draft (anticipated to be deep once again) Dorsey has positioned the Chiefs beautifully ... if he can hit on those selections. This year is not likely to yield a Super Bowl champion, but if Kansas City can continue to make progress, there is certainly a path to success in the future.

In another post, I said this wasn't Dorsey & Reid's team yet.  According to this, I was wrong (see Bil? My hand didn't even quiver.)

Unfortunately, the only relevant additions I can see they've made are Al, Kniles Davis, Mike DeVito.  The rest is unproven or mediocre or worse.  Especially the secondary.  Replacing the DB would be fine, if it were upgraded.

No credit for going from Cassel to Smith? From Pope to Kel/ Fas? From Quinn to Daniels?

These guys have gutted this roster and are building something. It seems like a bit hard on them to say they have done nothing. It is might and day in personnel and coaching. It is night and day in success.

Did I not say Al was a significant addition?  I'm sorry but improving from Pope to Fasano isn't significant when Fasano barely contributed.  He's mediocre when he does play.  Kudos to Dorsey.  He added an overpriced mediocre TE who didn't stay healthy.  Ditto for Chase Daniels, other than he stayed healthy.  I expect both to be cut next offseason, so big whoop.

Kelce has shown nothing.  I am optimistic tho.  Last year's draft looks like a bust unless Fischer ships up and Kelce stays healthy.  I like this year's draft but it's too soon to tell.

Right now, like or not, the Chiefs are rebuilding or retooling or whatever you want to call it.  So far the two haven't built anything.  Dorsey and Reid have yet to add one A grade piece to the puzzle.

Alex Smith -- Reid - A net gain over Cassel + 1
Husain Abdullah -- Reid - Possibly an improvement over Lewis, but certainly not a playmaker, we'll see.
Donnie Avery -- Reid - An upgrade to Jon Baldwin, for sure, but hasn't shown to be a primary #2. The equivalent of Steve Breaston before he was thrown in the dog house.
Marcus Cooper -- Reid - Shows promise.
Mike DeVito -- Reid - I see no net gain over Glenn Dorsey.
Anthony Fasano -- Reid - I see no net gain over Pope/Moeaki
Eric Fisher -- Reid - Has much to prove before he's better than Albert.
Sean Smith -- Reid - In all fairness, Brandon Carr was better here, but Smith is better than the Routt/Arenas debacle.
Mike Catapano -- Reid - Shows promise as depth.
Chase Daniel -- Reid - I generally don't give a crap about perennial backups. You're either showing promise as a future starter or you're replaceable. He makes too much money and he doesn't so promise for the future.
Knile Davis -- Reid - Shaun Draughn had a higher YPC and more receptions out of the backfield. The only possible plus is Davis is a decent returner on special teams.
Dee Ford -- Reid - Until this kid shows me more than that he has speed... like that he won't get pile driven on run plays, I don't like the pick.
Zach Fulton -- Reid - Could become a decent guard... early yet. Certainly doesnt' look like an amazing upgrade to the swinging gates KC has brought in since Shields retired, but we'll see.
Ryan Harris -- Reid - Not what he was when he came into the league, might not even make the roster
Ricky Henry -- Reid - Shows promise developing as a depth guard, but not much else.
AJ Jenkins -- Reid - One man's trash is another man's.... we'll see about that.
Travis Kelce -- Reid - Loved the pick, hope he stays healthy, could be the best pick Dorsey has made if he stays healthy. Should be an upgrade over any TE we've seen here since TG.
Eric Kush -- Reid - Looks like a good backup center, something KC really hasn't had in a while. Too bad he can't long snap. Wasting a roster spot on Gafford every year just to snap a football irks my ass.
Joe Mays -- Reid - I don't see an upgrade over anything KC has had at ILB next to Johnson in the past several years.
Chris Owens -- Reid - Poor man's Flowers... I guess. Like re-signing Javier Arenas..... yeah... woo.
Ron Parker -- Reid - Hasn't shown me he belongs on an NFL roster.
Anthony Sherman -- Reid - One of the better FBs in the league, a steal of a trade actually.
De'Anthony Thomas -- Reid - We'll see if Mighty Mouse is more might than mouse....
Vance Walker -- Reid - I don't like the fact they signed this guy to merely be a backup nose tackle when we needed an upgrade at DE that can rush the passer... we'll see.
Steve Gregory -- Reid - Already retired...
Tyler Bray -- Reid - Has shown me some promise, actually.
Malcolm Bronson -- Reid - Could be a player in a year or two
Jairus Campbell -- Reid - Who?
Sanders Commings -- Reid - Can't stay healthy, don't see a spot for him on this team.
Laurent Duvarney-Tardif -- Reid - A project with tools, but I've seen a lot of projects in my day.
Phillip Gaines -- Reid - Looks to be a solid CB prospect. Worried about the lack of ability to turn his head to the ball a couple times in week 1. I don't want another Willie Bartee.
Frankie Hammond -- Reid - A project lucky to make the team.
Demetrius Harris -- Reid - A project, starting to flash something, but not sure about starter material.
Jaye Howard -- Reid - Has shown me he belongs as a rotational backup DE.
James Michael-Johnson -- Reid - Looks like the 2nd best ILB on the team to this point, might be a good sign.
Nico Johnson -- Reid - Looks like a bust.
Rishaw Johnson -- Reid - At best, a backup. meh.
Kyle Love -- Reid - At best a backup, but doesn't look like he'll make the team.
Josh Martin -- Reid - Has some promise as a rotational pass rusher.
Ryan McKee -- Reid - Has some promise as a swing backup tackle.
Aaron Murray -- Reid - Well, if the kid ever gets to throw a pass I might make a judgement.
Daniel Sorensen -- Reid - Nothing more than a backup at this point. Dont' see a lot to be hopeful about in terms of a star.
J'Marcus Webb -- Reid - Another shit castaway of another team.
Charcandrick West -- Reid - Kid shows a bit of flash, kind of like him and want to see more.
Kyle Williams -- Reid - Blah
Albert Wilson -- Reid - Some promise in the slot, looks like they could have found something in the trash heap.
Frank Zombo -- Reid - A nice special teams/backup player but these are a dime a dozen.

Of all these guys I don't really see anything that upgraded much of anything.

Alex Smith - Upgrade
Donnie Avery - Slight Upgrade

Anthony Sherman - Upgrade
A lot of other blah and slight upgrades to depth. Some downgrades on the O-line.
No draft picks yet that upgraded shit. Kelce, if healthy might be. Not sure about this year's class. The only pick I really liked was the Gaines pick.

I don't see how its so rosy with Dorsey and Reid over the past regime with one exception: Reid is a pretty good football coach.

Disagree about Abdullah. We'll see. Picked luck twice in a big game. He's going to be a massive upgrade

The dude had one good game.  He's been a career backup.  Just because he's better than Lewis, doesn't make him good.

I would start Bronson over Abdullah today. Abdullah has slowed, but is better than Lewis (Lewis ran a 4.78 40, and did not belong in the NFL). Sorenson is slow, but good enough to make this squad. Good special teams player. Owens is raw, but better than anyone else covering the slot receiver. Gaines should make the team. Cooper is the best CB, and has a bright future. Smith is average, but has height for a corner. Parker sucks. Van Dyke is better than Parker already. I don't understand the love for Parker. Berry needs to take his time returning, and get that heel healed. Commings is brittle, and probably a waste of space on the team.

Hammond is the second best receiver on this team after Bowe. Wilson is the third. Avery is a speed guy, and not much more. Hemingway is worthy to make the team if he can get healthy. Jenkins is garbage, and so is Williams (both are too soft for this offense). Harrison looks to be a practice squad guy. The Chiefs need to see if they can pan off Jenkins, cut Williams, and find someone off the final cuts to fill out their lineup. I would keep Williams over Jenkins at this point, but Jenkins is more likely to stick as he counts against the cap unless the Chiefs can finagle a trade.

Poe got handled against Carolina. He needs to remember this, and work on his technique. For all the talk, I haven't seen improvement this year. Catapano needs to get in here. I think he could be a missing piece. DeVito is the best DE on the team, currently. Bailey, and Howard look strong. Love, and Cudjo will have a hard time making this team. Walker hasn't shown me much.

Dee Ford is quick off the blocks, but that is about it. He is very average as a LB at this point. JMJ is actually better overall. DJ is the best lineman on the team. Hali continues to get the most out of his body, and has a great motor. Houston is coasting right now, but I predict he will pick it up. If he can stay healthy, and be consistent... he will be the best LB on the team. Mays is an improvement. Mauga is also better than what we got rid of last year. LBs are the strongest and deepest part of this team. Oh how things changed.

Kelce is going to be great this year if he can stay healthy. He just knows how to get open, and makes huge plays. Fasano is better this year. Harris shows promise in practice, but has yet to demonstrate he can play in a game.

The OL is a mess. The Chiefs should plant Fisher on the bench, where he can gain inspiration and learn not to kill his QB. Allen is bigger, but still sucks. Hudson is better. Kush is better, but can only play Center. Fulton looks like a third round rookie RG. Stephenson is the best player on the offensive line. LDT doesn't know what he is doing, but he seems to do enough to get by on talent alone. Harris is not horrible. Henry is overrated, but might stick. The Chiefs need about three new guys on the line. Despite their troubles at CB, the OL remains the weakest link on this team.

Charles should be as good as ever. Gray is the second best back, iMO. Davis needs to stop tap dancing, and get back at running North South. Thomas is a return guy, who could occasionally be used as a runner. Sherman is the best FB in the NFL. West could be very good, but may not pass waivers to put on the practice team.

Finally, Smith is better than ever, but probably will not make it through the season in one piece. Daniel represents the only backup with experience to take over when Smith gets nicked up. However, he is probably near the bottom of the league as a #2 QB. Tyler Bray has a million dollar arm, and a ten cent head. Murray has great timing, but needs to develop. Average arm, with surprisingly average accuracy.

He was out of football for a year. Lewis was the overrated incumbent starter. We'll see.

To be fair: HA started 9 of 9 games in 2011 and 15 of 15 in 2010.  Just the same, I suspect he's not even a short term solution at FS, yet alone a long term one.

I guess my point is that I think every position group is better than when they got here except O line.

They still aren't good enough.  This isn't pre-school Tee-ball.  There are no trophies for doing one's best.

Only one team ends up being  the winner each year....and the Chiefs are not even a playoff lock this year.

Diehard, I agree with the exception of the CB's......I am not convinced that they are better.

I think the WR group is a wash....They were below average before and they remain below average.
