Surprise Cut? Just a Hunch

I have this funny suspicion that Fred Williams makes the team along with Frankie Hammond.

Does that mean a surprise cut or do they carry 7 wr's.

If a surprise cut is in order, who would it be?

Based on the depth chart, and his veteran leadership qualities, it's presumed that Jason Avant makes the team but I'm just wondering if we're in for a surprise.

Kush had the center job and lost it to a rookie with minimal experience there.  If the Chiefs have a backup, he's just not needed considering the other uncertainity in the line positions.  I also think Avant is expendable.  Rather to have Maclin and Wilson with DAT and three potentials than keep Avant.  JMHO

no doubt Avant is expendable in our eyes but a while back during a training camp interview it was mentioned about his route running and that he is another coach on the field and his "leadership" we have Maclin now he can take that spot or he should . I think Andy & co need to figure out if its worth his price tag..surprise cut? It wouldn't surprise me but if they do better do it wquick so another team can pick him up ..its the right thing to do.

s Dwayne Bowe on the Browns’ roster bubble?

The Browns signed Dwayne Bowe to a two-year deal last March that included $9 million guaranteed. That should, ahem, guarantee Bowe a roster spot despite the soon to be 31-year old wide receiver missing nearly three weeks of training camp with a sore hamstring and not catching a preseason pass from starting quarterback Josh McCown.

But the Browns have a crowded receiving corps despite not having a true No. 1 receiver, and entering Thursday night’s preseason finale there’s still some uncertainty as to which receivers will make the final roster.

Solomon Wilcots, who works for NFL Network but is paid by the Browns to call preseason games on Cleveland television, appeared on the team’s official pregame radio show Thursday afternoon and hinted that Bowe is not a lock to make the roster.

“He needs to deliver (tonight),” Wilcots said. “After talking to the coaches he needs to show up tonight to be a part of the 53-man roster (this weekend).”

Wilcots didn’t say which coaches to whom he’d spoken, but his words at very least make for an interesting discussion. The Browns also have a decision coming on Terrelle Pryor, who’s trying to transition from quarterback to wide receiver but has yet to play in a preseason game.

Pryor is supposed to play in the preseason finale, but Browns coach Mike Pettine said this week that Pryor doesn’t necessarily have to play to make the 53-man roster.

Brian Hartline, another veteran receiver acquired in the offseason, is going to make the team. Andrew Hawkins and return specialist Travis Benjamin are going to make the team, too. Second-year receiver Taylor Gabriel and Bowe probably make the team, but fourth-round rookie Vince Mayle has had a tough camp.

Pryor is the wildcard and Marlon Moore is listed as a wide receiver but last year was a core special teams player. So, that’s eight players for six or seven spots — and seven probably only make it if Moore makes it.

The Browns earlier this week released defensive tackle Phil Taylor despite Taylor having more than $5.4 million guaranteed. Taylor had offseason knee surgery and might not be healthy enough to play this season.

Another expensive cut seems unlikely, but what Wilcots said at least adds a little intrigue to Thursday night’s preseason finale and the roster moves that will come in the 30 or so hours that follow.

The difficulty of these cuts is something we have not seen in a long, long time. That bodes well.  When we are talking about being able to cut the level of players we are talking about, we have depth.

Without depth, we are one injury away from another lost season.  With depth, the entire team psychologically will be able to play with more abandon and intensity.  It will make it a lot less stressful for the fans, too.

Though I am a homer, nothing about this team discourages me.  I would not rule out anything.   Whoever plays us is going to have their hands full to say the least.  We have to opportunity to have a winning road record.  At home, we are capable of winning 3/4 of our games. That combination has playoffs written all over it.

There are several players that in other years would have made the team.  There is great depth here.

How do you cut Reaves or Ware, who both had good camps and probably won't make it to the practice squad.

How about Williams or Brown(who played well on special teams also, and catches everything).

Does Sorenson make it, with 4 Safeties already locked in?  He deserves to.

Wouldn't want to be Reid or Dorsey today.

The upside is these guys are likely to get jobs with other teams and go there with a good attitude toward KC Leadership. The organization is starting to earn respect. KC Chiefs once again a class act.

Kush may be gone. I guess Wilkie was right. Zach Fulton looked very good at Center. If he can do that without ever playing there in a game, then why do they need Kush?

That's true, and I believed Reid's hype about Kush after we lost Hudson.  I was confident in Kush, but he needs to go if Fulton can back up. We need that spot to retain someone more valuable.

Yep, Fulton can play two spots on the line and I don't know that Kush can.  All Reid's assurance that Kush could step in for Hudson didn't keep the Chiefs from using a second on Morse.  Maybe the front office was dragging a red herring?  Did Kush lose his job in TC or in the preseason games?

Whoever ends up starting gets to line up in front of Vince Wilfork week 1.  Throw in JJ Watt and Clowney (who I believe will be out to prove something this year, and what better place to start than the home opener), and we're going to find out exactly what we have in the O-line right off the bat.

I am not confident.

Sure, the office was dragging a red herring.  I try to take all such pronouncements with a grain of salt.  All teams do that.  As little as Kush played in preseason, he probably didn't even lose the job in TC.  The drafting of Morse said everything in retrospect.  I merely passed it off as drafting BPA.

Watt will get his. The other two, uh.. Not worried.

We run the ball with Charles we will be just fine.

But if they can handle it, imagine the optimism!

And Smith, if one of them is coming at you and you don't have a pass to make, just go down and protect your head an spleen. Don't go diving head first for one more yard (if he hadn't done that, he wouldn't have lost his job in SF that year, likely).
