Are the Chiefs the Fourth-Best Team in the League?

Recommended Posts

Yes, this is provocatively titled. Nevertheless, the points listed herein are worth reflecting on. If you are ready to throw in the towel on this season, at least be informed before doing so.

As of today there are six undefeated teams remaining among the NFL's 32, and the Chiefs have played three of them. There are three other teams in the league that have played two games against one of these six: The Baltimore Ravens (a one-win team that would be winless if not for two missed fourth-quarter field goals by now ex-Steeler Josh Scobee), the Jacksonville Jaguars (a one-win team that got their only win against the likewise 1-3 Miami Dolphins by a three-point margin wherein Dolphin Andrew Franks can't make a 42-yard field goal, but Jaguar Jason Myers can make a 58-yard field goal), and the Houston Texans (1-3, with their only win coming against a 1-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers team, and their only loss to a non-undefeated team coming in their season opener against the Chiefs).

The Chiefs beat the Texans handily, which is what a decent team should be able to do against a team with multiple position groups lacking quality depth or experience. Pessimism aside, there was an interval about one minute long during the Chiefs' Thursday night home game against the Denver Broncos where the Chiefs might have seemed like one of the NFL's best teams. Then week three and week four happened: In each game, the Chiefs' defense gave up two touchdowns in the first three drives although the opposing offense had a long field in every case. Along with inferior defensive play, the Chiefs' offensive line has been the least effective in the league in protecting it's quarterback, and accordingly every facet of the offense has suffered.

There's no questioning the toughness of the Chiefs' schedule until now: A road game against the Houston Texans, a home game against the Denver Broncos (although it was a Thursday night game, which should have heavily favored the Chiefs), a game in Green Bay, and a game in Cincinnati. What's left? Until now, the Chiefs' opponents' combined strength of schedule has been 13-3. What remains is one more game against the thus far undefeated Broncos in Denver, ten games (six of which will be played at home) against eight teams among which cannot be found a team with a winning record, and one "home game" played on neutral ground against a winless Detroit Lions team. The total combined strength of schedule in these remaining games is a less daunting 21-26.

The Chiefs need to prove that they are the Fourth-Best Team in the League by winning their next twelve games. Should the Chiefs win when hosting the Bears? Can the Chiefs win a game in Minnesota the week thereafter? Can a Steelers team with Michael Vick at quarterback succeed against the Chiefs in Kansas City? Will the Lions have managed their first win by the time the Chiefs meet them in Europe?

Actually, when you look at the problems the Chiefs are having in all aspects of the game, all of these games are potential losses for the Chiefs. Even so, these teams have their own problems. It's hard to evaluate the progress of a team that has gone through the grind of a schedule like the one the Chiefs have just been through. Is the offensive line progressing? Is Bob Sutton figuring out how his defense is going to run going forward? If the Chiefs can limp to the bye with a 4-4 record, some healing and some training might give this team everything it needs for a second-half push. I'd hate to throw out a word like "confident", but I'd like to think that we're conjecturing more than mere "possibility" here.

In the meantime:

Kansas City Chiefs, 1-3, 4th place in the AFC West, 11th-best team in the AFC.

Go Chiefs.

If they start winning it will be the same thing as 2012.  They haven't beat any playoff caliber teams, and have looked pretty damn bad against each one they faced.  "If" they do manage to make the playoffs, do you think they can win?  So far not a damn thing shows they can.  Especially since they will be playing on the road..

Same ol same ol  for the Chiefs kingdom yet again..

You meant 2013, right? In 2012, the Chiefs weren't beating anyone.

In 2013, they were doing fine against a playoff team. Unfortunately, the Chiefs' defense gave up 45 points.

In 2014, the Chiefs did beat two notable playoff teams, both of whom reached the Super Bowl. Perhaps if not for a ruptured spleen, the Chiefs would have been in the 2014 post-season as well.

I'm just hoping that this is a team that will learn to play up to their talent on both offensive line and defense.

yeah sorry 2013...

2012, by far, is the darkest season this organization has ever been through.

I'm just hoping that this is a team that will learn to play up to their talent on both offensive line and defense.

Looking to be a mighty TALLLL order once again..

The Chiefs lost to Denver, and they looked like a # 1 team. The next week the Chiefs lost to Green Bay, and they looked like a # 1 team. This past Sunday, the Chiefs lost to Cincinnait, and they looked like a # 1 team.

Summation, the Chiefs lost to three # 1 teams in a row. They are the fourth best team in the NFL!

That loss hurt this franchise more than people realize.
