If Chiefs resign Berry, they could use the franchise tag on Smith

Abdullah will turn 31 before training camp even starts. Why is everyone wanting so badly to retain him?

 

Eric Berry just turned 27 and Tyvon Branch just turned 29 in December.
 

Both Berry and Branch were used much more than Abdullah this season.

 

The obvious play is to keep the two guys you leaned on all season and that are younger, and let the older one go.

That is a good point. To me he seems better in coverage than Branch and Berry. Berry is definitely the best tackler and the best at run support. Honestly I am good if we can keep one of the three. 2 would be better of course.

Abdullah can flat cover. And the Chiefs defense changed when he started. He's the man.

I believe it is perceived that Abdullah brings the best value. Branch was hot and cold at his position as far as I could tell. Berry could be even more so. Abdullah wasn't flashy, but he was a consistent role player.

Berry stays. Smith goes. The Chiefs have to decide between keeping Abdullah or Branch (both are FA). The Chiefs need to spend more money on offense. That could mean they won't have money to sign all the vets on defense. 

 

The Chiefs need to add a wide receiver, Conley and Wilson should improve, but the window is small. So, it may be wise to add another veteran pass catcher. Marvin Jones could be targeted by the Chiefs in free agency.
