Dorsey Going to "Fight Like a Dickens" to Retain Daniel.

No, not really. He said wanted him at his (Dorsey's) price. Said that Daniel is competitive and wants a chance to start and that the Chiefs couldn't pay him starter's money.

Also said that he cannot comment on Griffin but that Reid wants a player who is smart and will work hard.

The article confirmed that Alex Smith was picked as a Pro Bowl alternate this year as well as 2013.

Bradford signed a two-year deal. We'll see if the talk about Daniel signing with Philly was to get Bradford to sign earlier and for less or real. I can't imagine it having much effect besides a backup plan. Poor Chase was a backup without even signing. Wonder if he'll still sign for backup pay to have a chance to come in if Bradford gets injured again. Unless he can start elsewhere, that might be his best chance. Not wishing for Bradford to get injured, but not betting against it.

There's still time for Daniel to be signed by the Rams or Texans  or Browns and have them one game short of the playoffs. Up until the end, we'll have to endure those who point to him as some I told you so situation until they fall short. Nothing against him, just talking about the teams. It's like Fitzpatrick and the Jets, IMO.

After a strong year in which he was clearly the motivating force for the Chiefs' offense, Alex Smith's situation will be a primary contributing factor to his opening the 2016 season as a Top Ten Quarterback. In years past, Smith played on offenses that had little talent and almost no depth in the receiving corps, but very strong running game personnel. For that reason, Smith was cast as a quarterback that 'needed a strong running game and strong defense to be successful'. Then Jamaal Charles went down, the offensive philosophy shifted, and that whole concept got turned on its ear.

In any case, Chase Daniel wasn't asked to do anything with what was left of a roster shredded by injury. Anyone trying to paint Daniel as a soon-to-be-elite quarterback that is slipping through the Chiefs' grasp simply isn't capable of recognizing the difference between high quality quarterbacking and aggressive gun-slinging.

The Chiefs were 6th in rushing, 30th in passing. Alex did have his career high in passing yards which placed him at 35th in the league in pass yds/game for the season. (not a typo) So with a #6 rushing team and #7 defense vs 30th in passing, Alex needs a lot of help.

I won't argue about where Smith is on the ladder, but yards per game is a stupid metric to EVER compare or rank a QB and I would say that if our QB was top ten in yards. YPA, third down conversions, red zone conversions, total rushing first downs on third down can be helpful, touchdowns/INT rate, etc. are better. We ran the clock out a lot in second halfs and QBs shouldn't be dinged for it, nor should playing catchup be rewarded. It's too shallow and that's not even claiming Smith is great.

Besides, 498 yards of that #6 rushing team was Smith and even more for teams having to account for him, either running or reading the defense or audibling into runs, which former QBs have credited him for. Second, having a #6 rushing team hurts Smith's opportunity for passing yards. Other efficiencies are more important. Third, the defense is helped by the offense (note: not giving Smith all the credit) resting the defense, not giving them short fields to defend, and giving them some leads so they could be more aggressive. It's a team game affected by everyone. Smith doesn't deserve more credit and he doesn't deserve less, by stupid metrics.

Great! More stats!

31-18. The Chiefs had more than a few games where they got up early thanks to the passing game, and then ran the ball to finish out the game.

Smith was successful with Frank Gore. How did Gore do when Smith left? Jamaal Charles was effective before Smith arrived, but when did Charles have his career year? Then Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware and Knile Davis were splitting carries, and they consistently got decent yardage. At what point does one have to admit that the quarterback is making the running game work, and not vice versa? Simply comparing volume statistics without context will not yield any useful information.

There were only 13 teams in the NFL that had winning records in 2015. Only 9 of those teams had winning records in 2014 as well, and only 7 of those teams had winning records every season since 2013. The quarterbacks of those teams in all three years: Carson Palmer, Andy Dalton, Russell Wilson, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Alex Smith.

It is a hard thing to prove, but I agree with you. There is a case to be made for Smith being good for RBs. And WRs and TEs for that matter. Watching the production of players after he left SF and seeing what he did for Charles and the Beard for that matter makes a pretty strong case that he is an above average QB even if total passing yards are bottom 5.
