Offseason Plan 6.0 - Mid-Combine Edition

Recommended Posts

Well, I was going to release this prior to the start of the combine but I had a few things come up and I didn't finish it early enough. So, with that, hope you enjoy, comment, and critique as usual. Might adjust post-combine, but for the most part this will be the last plan until its mock-draft-only time.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

SS ISA ABDUL-QUDDUS - Detroit (6'1" 201, age 26)
Athletic and rangy cover safety that is ready to become a starter or serious contributor. The Chiefs won't likely re-sign both Abdullah and Branch, so this is a guy that would be tops on my radar. Also, very good on special teams. The Lions lackluster performances from other safeties may push them to want to retain Quddus.
Offer Quddus 3 years, $6.0 million, with $2.1 million guaranteed at signing. Average annual cap hit of $2.0 million and annual cap hits of $1.7, 1.9, and 2.4 million.

WR ROD STREATER - Oakland (6'2" 195, age 28)
Was excellent his first 2 years in the league. He got injured 3 games into his third year, then the Raiders got stupid and put him on the bench last year. Could be an excellent short-term #2 or #3 at a ridiculously cheap price.
Offer Streater 2 years, $2.475 million, with $600,000 guaranteed at signing. Average annual cap hit of $1,237,500 and annual cap hits of $1.23 and 1.245 million. Include $1,000,000 in additional performance incentives.

LB TAHIR WHITEHEAD - Detroit (6'2" 242, age 25)
Very good special teams player that has taken great strides when replacing Stephen Tulloch when injured. Looks to be an emerging, quality starter as a coverage linebacker that supports the run quite well. Would do well learning with Derrick Johnson and could become his replacment. The Lions have a bunch of linebackers under contract, but they might push hard to retain this kid.
Offer Whitehead 3 years, $5 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed at signing. Average annual cap hit of $1,666,667 and annual cap hits of $1.35, 1.575, and 2.075 million. Include $1 million performance escalators in years 2 and 3.

CB SEAN SMITH - Kansas City (6'3" 218, age 28)
A key cog in Kansas City's lights out secondary, it's hard to imagine the Chiefs moving on from Smith. They very well could, but in this scenario I have the Chiefs striking a deal.
Offer Smith 4 years, $42 million, with $24 million in total guarantees, including $17 million at signing. Average annual cap hit of $10.5 million with annual cap hits of $8.0, 10.0, 11.0, and 13.0 million.

SS ERIC BERRY - Kansas City (6'0" 212, age 27)
One of the key, young pieces to Kansas City's formidable defense, its highly unlikely the Chiefs will let a perennial Pro-Bowler leave town.
Offer Berry 5 years, $48 million, with $22.5 million guaranteed at signing. Average annual cap hit of $9.6 million with annual cap hits of $6.5, 8.0, 10.0, 11.0, and 12.5 million.

LB DERRICK JOHNSON - Kansas City (6'3" 242, age 33)
The unquestioned leader of KC's defense, Johnson is an integral piece with no apparent replacement on board. The Chiefs would do well to re-sign Johnson to a team-friendly contract and let him play out his final years in Kansas City.
Offer Johnson a 2 year, $7.5 million deal, with $3 million guaranteed at signing. Average annual cap hit of $3.75 million and annual cap hits of $3.5 and $4.0 million.

SS TYVON BRANCH - Kansas City (6'0" 209, age 29)
Fully capable starter at the strong-safety position, the Chiefs used him in multiple ways last season. I expect that the Chiefs will want to retain his services going forward.
Offer Branch 2 years, $5.4 million with $1.6 million guaranteed at signing. Average annual cap hit of $2.7 million with annual cap hits of $2.4 and 3.0 million.

LB TAMBA HALI - Kansas City (6'3" 275, age 32)
The Chiefs have a choice to make this season with Hali. The Chiefs could let Tamba walk by letting his contract void on March 4th, thereby accelerating his bonus proration and leading to a cap hit of $4 million. They could also re-sign him before the void deadline and push the acceleration out until 2017. This is really a something the Chiefs and Hali have to agree upon. There is no doubt the Chiefs are better for having Hali, but if Hali's total cap hit this year is going to be far and above the $4 million it will cost to play without him, then the Chiefs might be better off letting him walk and drafting a replacement 3rd pass rusher. I'm guessing that Hali will sign a contract before that deadline that gives him a veteran minimum salary and a respectable roster bonus that will all hit this season.
Offer Hali a 1 year, $3.5 million deal, which includes a minimum salary of $985,000 and a $2.515 millon roster bonus due the 5th day of the new league year. Hali will count $4.5 million against the cap and the voids will remain in tact for 2017-2019 meaning that the Chiefs will still eat $3 million next year, but they get to have Hali another year rather than paying for nothing with no replacement in 2016.

LB FRANK ZOMBO - Kansas City (6'3" 254, age 28)
Zombo has been a quality back-up in Kansas City for a while now and is a very good special teams player. Capable of producing pressure when inserted into the lineup and defends the run adequately. There is value in keeping players like Zombo around.
Offer Zombo 2 year, $1,820,000 (veteran salaries of $760,000 and $900,000), with $100,000 guaranteed at signing ($50,000 per year) and $30,000 annual workout bonuses. Zombo will count at the veteran discount of $680,000 in each season.

CAP SITUATION

With the NFL releasing a number of $155.27 million, the Chiefs should be about $4.3 million under the cap in this scenario, which includes their rollover. I'm going to assume that goes towards some bargain finds, that Dorsey always has planned, and some space for the season at this point. We'll see, but I don't see changing that at this point.

SOME RANDOM INFO...

I thought long and hard about bringing in Cedric Thornton to replace Jaye Howard in this scenario, but with my planned mock, I didn't see the need for a starter to be brought in. I'd guess that Thornton will command about 5 million per on a 4 year deal, but we'll see. I had him initially pegged at a $4 million cap hit in 2015.

Also thought about Nolan Carroll, at $5 million per, along with Thornton in lieu of Sean Smith; kind of "bargain" replacing Smith and Howard and leaving KC without any "major" needs going into the draft.

NFL DRAFT

Round 1: DT VERNON BUTLER - Lousiana Tech (6'4" 325)
Butler is a mountain of a man with long arms and well-distributed girth. Similar build to Muhammed Wilkerson. Shows good initial burst off the football, but could work on snap awareness. Outstanding lateral agility to make plays away from his frame. Elite closing ability for a man his size, can generate pressure on the QB quickly. Needs work using his hands to counter and control blockers and keep them off of his frame.

Round 2: WR RASHARD "HOLLYWOOD" HIGGINS - Colorado State (6'1" 196)
Very quick receiver with excellent footwork to gain separation at the line and through his route. Highly developed router runner at this stage with the ability to separate on that alone. Explodes out of cuts and off of plants. Excellent hands. Large catch radius, showing the ability to extend and make catches away from his frame; snatches balls in the air. Lacks top-level vertical speed. Will not blow the doors off of corners and looks to be a prototypical possession receiver for a WCO. Gains most of his deep separation by setting up multiple-routes. Great runner with the football, will create YAC.

Round 3: LB JORDAN JENKINS - Georgia (6'3" 259)
Sets the edge relatively well. Good field awareness and doesn't overpursue plays. Terrific closing burst. Needs to develop better strength to take on NFL caliber blockers. Must develop better hand usage to shed and attack. Didn't put up eye-popping sack stats and that will cause him to fall, but he did put plenty of pressure on the QB and was excellent againt the run. Needs to add about 10 more pounds of good weight and get his core and upper body strength up, but if he does he could be an excellent edge defender.

Round 4: OL CONNOR MCGOVERN - Missouri (6'4" 306)
McGovern is strong like bull. Hell, he might be stronger than bull. Either way, this guy is a rock and will absolutely punish anyone he can get his mits on. A college tackle that likely has to move inside based on his shorter-than-ideal arm length. Sports good short-area footwork and speed in his sets. Can drive block in the run game. Packs a powerful punch in pass protection. Needs work on his kick slide and hand usage if he remains outside at tackle. Might be best as a guard that can slide out to tackle if necessary.

Round 5: CB JAMES BRADBERRY - Samford (6'1" 209)
Solid press-man corner with long arms and good balance, allowing him to keep contact and redirect receivers. Good footwork and understanding of transition. Solid open-field tackler and ball skills. Needs work in off-man, and gives up too much ground at times. Very similar to Sean Smith in his play style, but equally susceptible to plays over the top.

Round 5: OL WILLIE BEAVERS - Western Michigan (6'4" 324)
Tackle with excellent movement skills and overall footwork. Top-notch when operating in space. Lacks functional strength to compete at the moment. Will need work in an NFL weight room, especially on core and upper body strength. Could become a starting LT or RT with time, and maybe even move inside to LG.

Round 6: LB ANTWIONE WILLIAMS - Georgia Southern (6'3" 247)
Well-built, big linebacker with excellent field speed. Hits like a Mack truck when he gets to the ball carrier in space. At times stacks and sheds, works his way through alot of garbage to get tackles but at other times he's too easily locked onto by lineman. Will need work on hand techniques. Great field awareness, making plays all over the field. Extremely effective blitzer. Looked like the Georgia Southern defense at times. Outstanding closing speed to the ball carrier, gets there fast. Comes from a small program and sometimes looked like he was reading too much to make the play instead of understanding what the other team was going to do ahead of time, but he can be coached in that regard. Models his game after Navorro Bowman and could see similar success if he receives adequate coaching on his flaws.

14640527.jpg

Round 7: CB CHEATHAM NORRILS - Toledo (5'11" 195)
Likely one of the best stories in all of college football, Norrils lost his Junior season due to a "viral infection" that doctors never really fully diagnosed. Norrils returned to football as a Senior, being the physical and disruptive force he'd been before. Is a physical, relentless defender that never lets a receiver get comfortable. Excellent breaking speed to the football and ball-carrier. Plays the ball well, delivering big interceptions. Forceful tackler. Has the abilities to slide to free safety. Performed well against SEC competition, including Arkansas and Florida.
