Tamba Hali, Chiefs strike a deal: 3 more years!

Recommended Posts

So overthecap.com is finally showing numbers for Tamba Hali's contract:

2016: Just over $3.8 million against the cap, with about 12% of that to be paid in per-game roster bonuses

2017: A little under $8.6 million against the cap, with over 85% of that money guaranteed

2018: The same cap hit as the 2017 league year, except that the Chiefs can save up to $7 million by releasing Tamba Hali if his play no longer warrants his roster spot.

This contract is better than I thought it might be, although I still don't understand how Tamba Hali is really going to play up to these numbers. Perhaps John Dorsey thinks that the Chiefs' front-seven performance in 2015 was well below what it could have been statistically, explaining why he opted to bring back all of the outbound starters with the exception of Sean Smith.

It should be noted that the Chiefs' cap number for 2017 has crept up to $133.5 million, and Derrick Johnson's contract isn't yet factored into that calculation. On the one hand, the players under contract for 2017 don't look bad, but there are some names missing: Dontari Poe, Eric Berry, and Eric Fisher. There are still cap money-freeing transactions that could be made in that year involving the contracts of Justin Houston, Jamaal Charles, Alex Smith, Dustin Colquitt,

My concern at this point is that just as the Chiefs said "No" to Sean Smith when they said "Yes" to Justin Houston, the re-signings of Hali and Johnson will ultimately result in the departures of four of the six following players after the next two years: Jamaal Charles, Eric Fisher, Zach Fulton, Dontari Poe, Dee Ford, and Eric Berry. Out of all of these, Eric Fisher is the one whose extension could cost the most. His cap number for 2016 is above $7 million, and his fifth-year option will be far more expensive.

The Chiefs' cap situation isn't by any means bad, but they also have very little room for error following the turning bad of Ben Grubbs' contract. If the Chiefs can continue their new trend of retaining free agents at below market value, Chiefs fans can look forward to strong rosters for years to come. Even so, they will be saying "Goodbye" to some very good players sooner or later.

Tamba Hali will take it one year at a time. If Dee Ford can take more snaps, Tamba could contribute, and play three years. More than likely, the three years were to spread out the guaranteed money in order to lessen the Cap.

Right now, Dee Ford is not an every down player, and he may never be one. The good news is Dee Ford and Tamba Hali are complimentary. The Chiefs can rotate these guys, and do well. In a hurry up offense, neither is going to kill you by staying in.

He might, but the Chiefs are bound to Hali for both of the first two years. Unless the roster spot becomes more valuable than Hali is, Hali's here until at least 2018: The Chiefs can't save any money by cutting him in 2017. Where the Chiefs have avoided it in other cases, they keep kicking the can with Hali contracts.
