Chiefs: 68 Players on the Roster

Recommended Posts

One of the things that was surprising about the Chiefs heading into the off-season is how many players they picked up on futures contracts when they seemed to want to retain so many of their own. Two days into free agency, the Chiefs have seven more players on their team than they can retain even on their practice squad, and they haven't even used their remaining seven draft picks yet.

overthecap.com is a little behind on posting free agent signings to their new teams: The data for Tamba Hali's and Derrick Johnson's new contracts has not yet posted, and I imagine a similar situation exists for other teams as well. At the time I checked this morning, the Chiefs' roster ranked tied with the 49ers for sixth in the league for having the most players under contract (66), with only the Bills, Eagles, Steelers, Jaguars, and Cardinals ahead of them.

The Chiefs in 2015 were much stronger from One to Fifty-Three than they had been in years past, but John Dorsey is hardly done churning the roster. Ben Grubbs was just purged from the Chiefs long-term plans, and there are more cuts waiting for players whose release would open relatively little cap room, but will clear the way for players with a future in the organization.

What players currently on the Chiefs' roster do you expect to be released before cuts to 75?

• For a long time I've imagined that Frankie Hammond was only around because the receiver corps lacked depth and because he was fair on special teams. He lacks consistency in the passing game, and his special teams play has hardly been error-free. His run with the Chiefs ends after week three of this preseason as he will likely be surpassed by on the depth chart by Fred Williams. His release would save almost no cap money.

• Knile Davis has never overcome his ball security issues. After three years with the Chiefs, he is the fourth runningback on the depth chart. He could potentially net a seventh-round pick on the basis of his highlight reel, and depending on how the draft and the post-draft free agency period go, might be traded away before the start of training camp. His departure would likewise save little cap money.

• The Chiefs don't punt like they used to. Dustin Colquitt has been a faithful field flipper for years, but they are now a team that shouldn't need one of the league's most talented punters, and could get by with a younger, cheaper talent. Colquitt's contract makes him virtually untradable, although a team that suddenly finds itself needing a punter might be willing to give up a seventh-round pick. His release would save the Chiefs a little over $2 million after that number is adjusted by Colquitt's replacement. This only happens if the Chiefs draft a punter, and then see evidence in training camp that he will be capable at the position.

Fanaika, Cooper, and Pughsley are other players that may not make it the regular season as Chiefs, but would probably get through the cuts to 75.
