Chiefs cut 3rd round pick KeiVarae Russell, per NFL Network

Recommended Posts

The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly cut cornerback KeiVarae Russell. This is shocking because Russell was the 74th overall pick in this year’s draft. A third round pick has already been cut. Rand Getlin of NFL Network is reporting this news.

I'm told the #Chiefs have released defensive back KeiVarae Russell. Special teams numbers game. Super talented player. Likely to be claimed.

Russell was inactive in the Chiefs first game. He had obviously been passed on the depth chart by others like sixth round pick DJ White. Even if this were a redshirt year, I’m stunned the Chiefs have cut him. I can’t remember a third round pick being cut this early.

This marks the second draft pick from 2016 not to make it. Fifth round pick Kevin Hogan was cut as well and signed with the Browns practice squad.

What in the heck happened here?

DJ White overtook Russell. Russell was thought to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick by experts. He performed well at the Indy combine. There was a question about his health after he suffered a broken leg. http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/14195072/keivarae-russell-cj-prosise-notre-dame-fighting-irish-injured-win-boston-college-eagles

The speculation is with this move and restructuring of Houstons contract that the Chiefs are freeing up cap space to make a big move like trading for and signing a CB like Joe Haden from the Browns. Last weeks game was an abomination for the first half on defense. Losing Sean Smith was so huge and it was obvious last week.

They have seen Russell through OTAs, TC, pre-season, and one more week.  Give the front office credit for admitting a mistake and moving on.  Too often we have seen the Chiefs hang on to early draft picks that waste cap space and a roster spot and just never work out.  If Russell becomes a starter for another team later on, then so be it.  The coaches here obviously didn't see a place for him because it would be natural to be biased towards one's third round pick.  There could also be some behind the scenes problem that we'll never learn about.

I'd rather see a replacement for Zombo.  Gaines didn't play all that badly and he'll get better with experience and conditioning.

Keenan Lewis was signed to a 5 year contract in New Orleans for $26.3 M in 2013. November 2015 was placed on IR for a hip injury and had surgery. He appeared on their PUP list to start the preseason. August 3rd, he was activated, and practiced once. He was released on August 19.

Keenan Lewis may be healthy now. It is likely he was rushed to return too soon. New Orleans also was in a bind trying to work out a contract extension with Drew Brees. Releasing Lewis enabled New Orleans to make room for Brees' extension.

Smith was good. He got roasted on Sunday. It is more a missing pass rush and Abdullah was a big part.

Unless another team claims him on the waivers, this move costs the Chiefs.
