Good News on Re-signing Berry and Poe

Recommended Posts

The Chiefs right now, even with the increase in salary cap, are going to be at least 1.5 million over right now.

This will flip quickly once they decline the Foles option (10.75) and release Charles (7 mil).  That would give them enough space to sign either Poe or Berry and depth and rookie class.

They will need to do more work to keep them both.  I think Dorsey can pull it off if he wants to, but expect FA visits to be very quiet.

Options for more cap space:

-Jeremy Maclin has a 9.75 base salary for 2017.  Ask him to take a slight paycut (lack of production) and convert more of it into a bonus.

-Hali retirement; let him keep half of his remaining bonus and repay the other half.  (Would rack up around 4.5 mil in space)

-A DJ retirement, even if none of the bonus is returned, would give 2.5 mil in space

-Dustin Colquitt contract extension to push his 4.9 million cap number (wtf Dorsey lol) down

They could also rework Houston again, but they have to stop kicking that can over and over.

Agree.  4 comp picks coming our way next draft, too.

Neither Poe nor Berry are worth destroying the cap over. The Chiefs need a healthier nose tackle and a cheaper strong safety. For value against production, neither Poe nor Berry are worth what they will be paid elsewhere. If they want to be Chiefs, they will be around in 2017.

Franchise tag Poe. Let Berry go and take the 3rd round compensatory pick. If Poe can stay healthy and not need to be spelled frequently, long-term contracts can be discussed.

Cairo Santos will be eligible for a contract after this season. It's time to get Dustin Colquitt off of the books: Punters don't score points, and Colquitt is a luxury for a team that doesn't need to flip the field to the extent it formerly did.

Punters don't score points, but I think it is important to have a good special teams coach that can get the most out of their punting team due to field position, etc.

While watching a variety of games yesterday, it became obvious that the punter is more important than most fans think.  There were a lot of 35 yd. punts and some returnable.  It showed the value of the Chiefs having a good punter that pins the opposition back on many occasions.

It's not that I deem punters to be valueless. It's just that you can buy a lot of depth or a good starter for the money the Chiefs' punter is being paid. If your offense has better personnel, presumably you won't have to punt as often, and an inferior punter wouldn't see the field enough to be a significant factor in the result of the game.

It's not like Dustin Colquitt has been perfect at his job. His 23-yard punt from Kansas City's 17-yard line in the first quarter against the Steelers was a contributing factor to that game being out of hand so early. If he gets that ball across midfield, the Chiefs aren't forced to play keep-them-out-of-field-goal-territory defense, and perhaps the Chiefs get the ball back with only a 15-point deficit instead of a 22-point deficit. If a punter is making just south of $5 million and is the highest-paid punter in the league, he's literally got to be perfect. It's a fundamentally simple job, and there aren't many excuses to be made for the position when execution is lacking.

If the Chiefs were frequently forcing safeties off of coffin corner kicks, I would feel quite differently about this. Colquitt's placement is not what I would consider of the $5 million variety.

Not racking up a ton of safeties is a poor argument for dumping a good Punter.  Field position is a huge thing in the NFL.

But the Chiefs are going to need to make a change at Punter soon.  Colquitt's ability is going to be eroding before long and they spend too much of their cap space to afford a 5 million per season punter.

Agree, but they'd better replace Colquitt with someone good.  There were tons of poor punts yesterday.  Maybe it was the colder weather or winter winds, but maybe some teams just don't emphasize special teams as much.  In general, the Chiefs have gained field position on punts and even without the safeties, the punts inside the ten hinders the opposition offense.  Punts that can't be returned can add up to a lot of yards over the course of a game.

Colquitt is a very positive force.  We win many close games and he is a very dependable guy.

Why not continue to evaluate players ( Poe's back, DJ's achilles rehab...) before promoting roster decisions.

The one thing for sure, Eric Berry must be resigned.

I agree. My point is that you don't have to spend $5 million a year to get that. Punters that can kick the ball 55 yards without frequently shanking their punts are easy enough to find. It's the coverage team that makes the punter's job worth something. When the Chiefs release Colquitt, they get to keep their special teams.
