Chiefs Announce 2017 Starting QB

Recommended Posts

He had one year left on his contract. He could have forced the issue, and then the 49ers would have had a bigger mess.

If there had been a 'gentlemen's agreement', I would have expected Harbaugh to keep his jaw shut when it came to the aforementioned 'mutual-not-mutual parting' article.

He was under the 49ers control for one more season.  The 49ers had all the leverage and he didn't have shit.

Baalke didn't like Harbaugh, as he was getting the credit for all the success (Harbaugh didn't deserve it all, but Baalke hardly deserved any).  Jed York is a golden-spoon owner that really has no idea how a successful operation is ran, and chose his bestie over an above-average Head Coach.

Harbaugh chose Kaepernick over Smith and went to 2 conference championships winning one and going to the Super Bowl. Reid has chosen Smith for 4 years and we're one and done with 16 points at home last year.

You see, I don't think Harbaugh really was pitting one side against the other and was picking a favorite.

Alex Smith went out with a concussion and the Offense just happened to start sparking with more Octane with Kaepernick in the line up.  Unlike Marty, when he would keep going back to Grbac which led to Gannon going to Oakland, Harbaugh wisely just stuck with the hot hand.  Sticking with the hot hand is the right choice and he did the right thing by letting tinyhands be a starter, on a team of his choice, instead of keeping him as a back up.

Both QBs had a hot hand. Smith was the highest rated QB at the time and had come off a 25-27, 310+ yards, 3-4 TDs, before the concussion in the game and a quarter. Then had just blown out Buffalo the game before that.

Teams didn't have film on Kaepernick or the pistol and Kaepernick had nothing to lose (old job if risks were picked, hello new starting job if not).

Not arguing Kaepernick should or shouldn't have started, but the hot hand was, to borrow a word here, "spin."

The hot hand as in more big plays.  They both did well, but Kaepernick brought more of a dual-threat dynamic to the team when he went into the line up.

Because the Chiefs' surviving 2013-2016 post-season teams are NCAA compared to the 49ers' 2012-2013 teams. Albert Wilson and numerous other game day actives wouldn't have made the 49ers' practice squad in those years.

Overall, Harbaugh's record was Smith was better than his record with Kaepernick.

It's funny how football's a 'team game' until it doesn't suit your argument. Kaepernick is not a good quarterback, never has been a quarterback, and therefore was not the motivating force in the 49ers' post-season wins. Kaepernick's career will end having started fewer than half of the games Smith has. By the time Smith's career is over, he may have started three or four times as many games as Kaepernick will have.

We aren't supposed to use stats with QBs. Like Kurt Warner said,  you have to be willing to lose to win. Harbaugh saw that in Kaepernick and knew Smith would just try not to lose with high percentage passes. Colin Kaepernick has turned out to be a horrible QB and the fact that a very successful, knowledgeable coach would boot Smith in favor of Kaepernick should tell you something. The worse you AA fans make Kaepernick out be, the more hope we can Dilfer our way through with our defense.

Where's the dual threat now? And yet Smith's still starting. Smoke and mirrors. And if I could see it in 2012, Harbaugh should have seen it, too. But like people on these boards, they see what they want to see, and ignore data indicating anything contrary.

In the end, because Smith is still going to be in the league, the chances of winning a Super Bowl with Alex Smith will continue to be higher than the 0% chance Kaepernick managed. But keep moving those goalposts and continue trying to build analogies between things that are not truly analogous.
