That makes sense now. Sounds like Bowe. Hopefully he brings some speed and route running to the table. Hard to make a living purely out jumping people. If he does have those tools, he would not be a waste.

Williams is a stud. Period.

Chiefs should trade up for Watson & develop him under Mr. Smith the next season or so.

Still behind Charles Harris as the best Defensive addition

No quarterback has survived in the NFL, in modern times, who threw less than 54 mph. Watson's throws were measured at 49 mph. Every quarterback at the combine knows they will be tested. Watson topped out at 49 mph. This is far to slow to make it at the NFL level. While he was a wonderful college quarterback, his skills do not transfer to the NFL. Pass on Watson.

They started measuring arm strength with a speed gun in 2008. Mike Glennon, Dak Prescott, and Tyrod Taylor. Taylor, and Prescott were injured. Prescott clearly has a strong arm, but was slowed by a bad shoulder injury. Glennon really wasn't much of a starter, although Chicago seems to think he will be.

The ball travels 3 feet ahead of pass thrown just 2 mph slower (20 yards distance). If you give a corner, such as Marcus Peters, a 3 foot margin, it will result in incomplete passes, and interceptions. Defenses are much more sophisticated in the NFL. Players are much faster, and the margins are less. The only players to meet the test are Kiser, Trubinsky, Evans, Mahomes, and Webb.

i think we would have a decent shot to grab Mahomes or Webb....Evans needs the most work of them all

Ask 11

11 wasn't checked on a radar gun. They started doing that in 2008.  http://blogs.ourlads.com/2016/03/02/quarterback-ball-velocity-at-nfl-combine-2008-2015/

I do not suspect Alex Smith has inferior arm strength. He seems to be able to fit the ball into a tight window. His problems are willingness to throw the ball into tight spaces, and inability to be accurate on long throws. He doesn't have a rocket, but from my observations, he throws a faster ball than Watson.

Corey Davis is a waste with Alex Smith throwing the ball.

We are not drafting for Alex Smith. We are not drafting for one year. We are not drafting him to be ready and number one on day one. He needs to learn the pro level, earn the spot, etc. Worry about QB future wise (whether that's drafting this year or whatnot). Rookie years are cheap, by the time he gets to his next contract, QB may be set. Meanwhile, you'd be giving Smith a good asset, even if not optimized. Coach him not to Smith, but to Davis' role and potential, moving parts will change.

Make your team better in your vision, not at the expense of a QB that's better per se, but in general. If Alex doesn't cut it overall and doesn't cut it for Davis, he'll be cut.

Don't draft differently than your vision - draft for your system, teach your players your system, play to player's strengths but in your system, move on when opportune.

Too wordy, in this instance.

Proper response. WR good. Ugh. QB bad. Ugh. Draft QB next year good. Ugh ugh. out.

True, but you can say that about any of the top thirty picks. Someone will fall. Davis didn't do any timed events at the combine.

You build your offense around your QB and until they have a new starting QB, you're building the offense around Alex.

Did you see my second pick?

Yes and if you like Mahomes enough to pick at 35, why not just take him 8 picks earlier if it's the difference between getting him and not getting him?  Especially considering the cost of big time QB contracts, giving up that extra team option year would be completely baffling from a cap point.

The Vikings did it right in 2014 when they drafted Teddy Bridgewater*: They traded up for the final pick of the first round on a quarterback that graded out at approximately the first round. Bridgewater actually checked a lot of boxes for a prototypical first-round quarterback prospect, but in a draft that featured Jadeveon Clowney, Sammy Watkins, Khalil Mack, Mike Evans, Jake Matthews, Odell Beckham, Jr., and more, someone had to slide.

You don't do that when a quarterback grades out as one of the better quarterbacks in the draft, but not as an actual first-round quarterback prospect. Good general managers don't let bad general managers artificially drive up the price on prospects. In those markets, you're better off trading for a quality starter.

* I'm not crazy about Bridgewater, but you could do a lot worse.
