NFL salary cap for 2017 season set at $167 million

Recommended Posts

NFL general managers and coaches now have a little more certainty at their disposal as they prepare for free agency.

The NFL salary cap for the 2017 league year has been set at $167 million, a league official told NFL Network's Judy Battista on Wednesday.

The figure represents a more than $12 million raise over last year's cap figure on $155.27 million.

Since 2012, the cap has been increased by about $47 million. It marks the fourth straight year the cap has gone up by more than $10 million over the previous year.

Most NFL teams are heading into free agency with ample cap space. With free agency set to begin March 9, there could be plenty of big deals for a free agency group that isn't as packed with as much star power as in seasons past.

Here's a look at the available salary-cap space for each NFL team, according to Overthecap.com (as of March 1):

The Patriots have a competitive advantage because they symbolize a team that is likely to be in the thick of a Super Bowl run every year, and players are willing to take less to play there because they want a chance at winning a Super Bowl.

It's a hard hurdle, but the Chiefs have to overcome it. Father time will eventually catch up with New England. For now, the Chiefs need to make wise choices, and do a better job at reaching their goal.

The Patriots don't overpay free agents. That's the advantage. They have 50 players on their roster, and only three have a cap number above $10 million. One is their quarterback. Another is the left tackle. The third is a safety/cornerback. Three more players have a cap number above $5 million. The Patriots don't hinge their future success to any one player or position, making them much more viable when the injury bug bites. They were able to afford Martellus Bennett behind Rob Gronkowski, and they will likely show solid depth again when 2017 rips away a few Patriots from the lineups.

By comparison, the Chiefs are paying a pass-rushing linebacker over $20 million, two players over $10 million, and nine more players over $5 million. Berry will almost assuredly be the tenth player in the $5-10 million range. It's hard to afford depth when you overpay so many of the starters.

Brady makes the O line and WRs better. They can bring anybody in at those positions over the years (and they have) and they win Super Bowls. The Patriots don't have to spend billions to prop Brady up. Us? We blame an LG and a battered defense for the reason we can't score more than 16 points in a playoff game and go one and done.

Belicheat made Matt Cassel look pretty good too. So, while Brady is terrific, you might have to hand a lot of that credit over to the coach, who seems to have a pretty good system.

Ah the Cassel vs Brady because of Bellicheat thing again. Bellicheat was terrible and fired before he had Brady. The year Cassel had paled to the years Brady had. They didn't make the playoffs. Cassel actually had a better year in KC without Bellicheat.

To be fair, not many teams go 11-5 and miss the playoffs.

Osweiler will be at 19 mill. There are 21 QBs with a projected cap hit higher than Brady. That is ridiculous. I understand it. He wants the rings more than the money, but that gives the pats such an advantage.

The best player at the highest paid position has the 43rd highest cap hit. Man o man.

yea he'd get the Alimony

Brady's Endgame after he retires. Or while he is playing. Catch her cheating or in no fault states, divorce for the alimony ( although I think he could still do that easily by taking the max from the Patriots).

Or stay married.
