The Chiefs have two needs at MLB. They need a MIKE, and they need a replacement for DJ (WILB). Maualuga is a MIKE. They haven't had a guy like that since ... well that is a sad story. Anyway, DJ is incredible, but there is no guarantee he will be able to come back healthy. The Chiefs need both.

Jaraad Davis had an exceptional pro day. He is the best WILB in the draft, IMO. Get him, get Maualuga, and the problem is solved.

The Chiefs don't need Rey Maualuga on a long-term contract. Maybe a two-year contract with a player option to void after one year. His market can't be that great right now, but he could fill an immediate need on this defense if his physical shows he is healthy. I don't know that there are any other more worthy value-players to be found on the market.

Why would they need him at all?

He's had durability issues for most of his career in Cincinnati and he's slow in result. Go watch him play against Dallas.

Dude was so slow that he was invisible because he was almost never around the ball. He sucks.

This draft is loaded with MLBs. We can live with Wilson in that spot if DJ returns to his former health. We'll have to draft his replacement now so DJ can nourish him into a stud.

The Chiefs need a thumper to play RILB (MIKE), whether that comes from FA or the draft. I prefer the draft. It's cheaper, and it is more likely not a 2 year band-aid on the  problem.

RILB (MIKE)

TJ Watt played ILB, before he was moved to OLB (due to injuries), December of 2015. He hadn't played OLB since he left high school. So, although people list Watt as an OLB, he might be suited for a strong side ILB position. He weighs 254 lbs.

Jarrad Davis plays at 240 lbs. He ran a 4.54 at his pro day, and jumped 38 1/2 vertically. His 20 shuttle, and standing long jump were impressive. I believe he lifted 22 or 23 reps. He was a heavy tackler last year. Some compared him to Ray Lewis. He could play along side of D J.

Blair Brown weighs 238, has good instincts, is explosive, and a good tackler. He played ILB, and was a tough, sure tackler at Ohio State.

Kendell Beckwith weighed in at 243 for the combine, and pushed 20 reps. He looks like the RILB the Chiefs need. Beckwith didn't do any timed events or jump.

Ben Gedeon weighed 244 at the combine. He was slow in the 40, but his 4.13 20 yard shuttle time is an indication he is quick enough to play LILB. He lifted 28 reps. That kind of power at the MIKE is important. The Chiefs use their LILB to do the dirty work, which frees up DJ at RILB to make plays. Gedeon could be the kind of guy that does just that.

Connor Harris is a local kid. He weighed in at 242, but was only 5'11". That is not ideal size, but sometimes that also converts to a player with better leverage. Good motor, good instincts, marginal athleticism, but proven tackling machine. He could be a starter, but more likely is a special teams player, and quality back up.

WILB

Duke Riley weighed 230 at the combine, and had a knack for finding the ball in college. He is undersized, but his college film is good. He has sufficient athleticism, speed, and power. He ran a 4.58 at the combine, and a 4.21 in the 20 yard shuttle.

Eric Wilson weighed 225 at the combine. His profile says he had a nose for the football, and was an impressive tackler. He was a converted safety, so they will have to work on getting him bigger, and stronger. He should be able to cover a receiver.

Anthony Walker weighed in at 238, but was a bit too bulked up. The profile writer thought Walker would play better at his normal weight of 230. He is a good tackler, good in coverage, and is instinctive.

Alex Anzalone played all three spots at LB for Florida, but was hurt quite a bit. He is a risk, because of his injury issues. If those are behind him, he would be an ideal LILB. Probably a bit too brittle though.

Needs to put on a little weight. Would be a nice 3rd rounder.
