Chiefs sign free agent pass rusher Marcus Rush

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a roster move. The team terminated the contract of linebacker Tourek Williams, and filled his roster spot by signing free agent linebacker Marcus Rush, per Matt Derrick.

In case you’re curious about the byline, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. Rush was a fan favorite the past two years thanks to big performances in the preseason. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a 2015 UDFA and spent that season on the practice squad. In 2016, he led the NFL with six preseason sacks, to go along with an interception, two pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

The 49ers ended up cutting him at the en do training camp and signing him to the practice squad. Rush eventually signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in December and spent the final two weeks on their 53-man roster.

49ers fans were excited about him during the preseason given the splash plays he made. However, while Pro Football Focus graded him among the best preseason pass rushers, he also ranked among the worst as a run defender. And considering nobody claimed him off waivers, it suggests other teams concurred about his potential.

He’ll get a chance to compete in training camp, but until he establishes multiple pass rush moves or adds more to his repertoire against the run, it will be an uphill climb.
