Ware's injury may not be as bad as it looked

Recommended Posts

Two potentially big developments for the first 2017 NFL season opener came up on Friday night.

The Chiefs saw RB Spencer Ware carted off but do not think it is the dreaded season-ending ACL while the Patriots saw WR Julian Edelman go down with what they reportedly believe is an ACL injury.

Adam Schefter tweeted that the Chiefs think Spencer Ware suffered a PCL injury, but he will undergo an MRI on Saturday to determine extent of injury. ACL thought to be fine.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid called Ware’s a sprained knee after the game but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Chiefs believed it was a PCL injury. This piece from the Star’s Terez Paylor suggests 2-6 weeks as a possible timeline.

As for replacing Ware, Kareem Hunt stepped right in after him so you have to think he sees the bulk of those carries for as long as Ware is out (if he misses any games). The Chiefs also have CJ Spiller who has shown a nice burst in the preseason. He could be another candidate.

Charcandrick West rounds out the top backs. If this injury is going to last a while, the Chiefs could also be looking at any running backs cut by other teams coming up on cut down weekend.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Spencer Ware was carted off the field in the first quarter of Friday night's 26-13 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks with what the team later called a right knee injury.

A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Ware suffered a PCL injury but he will undergo an MRI on Saturday to determine extent of the injury and how much time he will miss. The timetable could be as little as two weeks and as many as eight, per the source, who added that Ware's ACL is thought to be fine.

"We'll just see how that turns out,'' Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

The team's top rusher a year ago was tackled after catching a short pass. He was holding his right knee before being taken from the field.

The Chiefs have some depth at running back with rookie Kareem Hunt, a third-round draft pick, as well as veterans Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller. Hunt averaged 4.3 yards per carry after Ware was injured.

The 229-pound Ware, the Chiefs' biggest and most physical runner, led the team with 921 rushing yards last season. He added another 447 yards receiving.

"Kareem got good work last week and he learned how fast this thing can change where all of a sudden you become that starter and in a position to do that,'' Reid said.

Spencer Ware has been diagnosed with a torn PCL and will likely need season-ending surgery.

Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder announced the diagnosis on Sunday. Ware is also dealing with damage to his LCL. He'll get a second opinion, but in all likelihood, Ware will go under the knife. Third-round rookie Kareem Hunt will now proceed as the team's unquestioned workhorse and could finish the year in the RB1 conversation if all goes right.

Yes our short yardage run game flat out sucks. If its 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 2, I have very little confidence we convert that on the ground unless Alex scrambles for it.

Hunt is going to get it done. Great vision. Ware and west lacked that.

That's a tough break for KC and Ware.  Good news is you may get to see Mahomes earlier than expected now.  I know *Andy* isn't an innovator at this point in his career, but if you don't see Hill thrown in to the backfield at least 10 times per game, something is very wrong.

What is, cause they're different ligaments?

I dont understand why the first team are fighting for extra yards. Ware bullied the man who tackled him for 8 yards but its only preseason so why attempt?

All blame goes to the coaches for not stressing the need to chill the fuck out during preseason. If you're a starter, you should not get injured in any way possible. That truly should be the first priority entering these games and the fact that we saw Ware bull his way for 8 useless yards in a worthless game is saying that the coaches did not emphasize the idea of stay healthy.

its not in their nature not to try your hardest. that why they are playing Pro Sports. Also Ihave heard t more times than not that when you  let your guard down is when you get hurt.

Its a bigger issue  There have been 24 ACL injuries this preseason. Grunny & Petro talked about it this morning.. everyone is getting bigger and faster but ligaments stay the same..just the nature of the beast ..something has got to give
