Iceman57 12 Posted October 12, 2017 Share Posted October 12, 2017 I'm not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but then more about the Chiefs cap situation and contracts that John Dorsey did, I was very surprised when I noticed how much dead money the Chiefs are still paying players that haven't been with the Chiefs in years. Jaye Howard. $5,000,000 Jeremy Maclin $2,400,000 Jah Reid $875,000 Josh Mauga $750,000 KeiVarae Russell $609,846 Cairo Santos $422,824 Ramik Wilson $250,062 Kevin Hogan $170,787 TOTAL $11,242,307 Then, these following contracts and salaries are just so idiotic: Tamba Hali $8,583,333 Dustin Colquitt $4,900,000 Tyler Bray $1,318,750 The grand total is close to $30,000,000 in just wasted money. Dustin Colquitt should have been the #1 target to re-structure his deal or just cut him($4.1 Million in cap savings) and find another punter. That savings in cap space would've allowed Jeremy Maclin to remain in KC, as well as Jaye Howard, who would've replaced Roy Miller and Jarvis Jenkins. Or with let's say with all that cap space, the Chiefs done several things: SIGN: T.J. LANG - LG Chiefs could frontload the contract giving Parker Ehinger all season to recover and not even risk coming back too soon, all the while, Lang would even be an upgrade at LG, so Bryan Witzmann stays a backup, where he rightfully belongs. RE-SIGN: Jamaal Charles - RB Not only does it make all of KC glad not to lose Charles, but the Chiefs could have him in what is the backup RB job that C.J. Spiller and Akeem Hunt occupied. In a sexy twist, Charles could be the new Kickoff Return Specialist, which Akeem Hunt currently mans. In conclusion, I don't think any of us Chiefs fans knew that behind the scenes, John Dorsey has creating such a mess with the cap. We were all distracted by the low-risk Free Agents and Draft Picks that actually turned into valuable players. Let's just hope that Brett Veach can clean this mess up and keep this current Monster of a team as good and well-balanced in good talent for many years to come. Colquitt is worth at least one win each year with his amazing punting. Easy to look back and assume different results. No, Colquitt was never worth a win. He contributed, but a lot of very average punters could have contributed that way. When it comes to punters, what you need most is a punter that won't shank his punt from deep in his team's own territory. How many teams wish they had Butt Kicker! That guy's leg makes him a weapon. Ragland isn't even fully healthy and already starting. Howard is an expensive cut but nobody expected the injury and if he could bounce back Chiefs would have saved some of that money. Maclin is just a regular cut as most players leave with that much dead money and would have cost a lot more if he was still on the roster. Hali has a big cap hit but they are still expecting production from him and Ford couldn't really step up his game to relegate Hali to a reserve role by the time of his new contract. Colquitt has a big hit but that's just the way contracts pay out in the final year. If I'm not mistaken he's the highest paid Punter in the NFL but had a little dead money so they couldn't find someone to replace him meaning that it's an acceptable amount. Bray on the other hand is our #3 QB and very cheap one at that, I was expecting more from him during preseason but regardless of his performance we need a 3rd guy on the roster and I doubt they found anyone better. Unless he decides to retire, he'll most definitely resign at a more cap friendly number. Not only is he a very good punter, but he's a great holder for the kickers, and it's been so long since we've had a muffed snap on a kick that people overlook the importance. Colquitt created the opportunity for the defense to pin its ears back and create short field turnovers by flipping the field with his accurate punts. He's also as good as anyone in the league at holding. In his prime, he was a weapon. His leg strength isn't what it used to be and as such he's not what he used to be.
