Trade deadline thread!!

Recommended Posts

There is nothing going to happen.  We don't have the draft picks, or the money.  Just have to ride this wave to the end!!!!!!!!!

Then why wouldn't Reid just say that then? It's not like the fans would riot if he did. Also, we have all but a 1st and 5th round pick in the next draft, so we do have picks to play with. We could give away a 2nd rounder today and get it back when we trade Smith.

That's a little unfair.  Veach brought in Butker and it's paid off big time.

true..also brought in Ragland this year and the O-Lineman from Cleveland. They are up against the wall tho in regards to cap and draft picks we are just too poor.

it would be nice  just to show that they are "all in" on getting  to the SB this year

Fair enough. A kicker to replace an injured guy.

I'm thinking in terms of a big move/ splash.

It's ok though. No need to mortgage

This team can win a superbowl

As OT pointed out, there's just not room to make a big splash.  Gotta play the hand that they hold.

I wish we would have given up less for Smith and I wish we had a SB with him, etc., etc., but this article was on point: https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/11/02/trade-deadline-grades-opinions-reactions-analysis-alex-smith-trade-49ers-chiefs-andy-reid

Haha: NFL coach Herm Edwards, he’d have invested in a rookie. “Knowing me, because I’m not afraid, I would have drafted a quarterback,” Edwards said.

“I think the reason it’s going to end badly is because somebody in this draft is going to end up being a great quarterback,” said 810 AM radio host Kevin Kietzman of the 2013 NFL draft, which produced quarterbacks EJ Manuel, Geno Smith, Mike Glennon, Matt Barkley, Ryan Nassib, Tyler Wilson, Landry Jones, Brad Sorensen, Zac Dysert, B.J. Daniels and Sean Renfree.

“There are going to be plenty of guys in this year’s draft that are going to be better than Alex Smith," he continued. "I guarantee you there’s a quarterback in this draft better than Alex Smith—probably three or four.”

To be fair, Andy Reid would get more lemonade than what other coaches did. And some never got time on the field, perhaps for good reason. But geez, 3 or 4 better? Who was the next year? One, two?

Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville.

Aaron Murray, Georgia.

Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M.

AJ McCarron, Alabama.

Tajh Boyd, Clemson.

Zach Mettenberger, LSU.

Braxton Miller, Ohio State.

Marcus Mariota, Oregon.

McCarron almost got traded to the Browns to start. Bridge water might play again sometime. Can't really say that we've missed out on Murray when he was on our team.

Heck there hasn't been 3-4 since that draft better than Alex Smith. What I love is that when Andy finally found his guy, he pounced. Should get people even more excited about Mahomes.

To say it in one class that wasn't being touted as being one of the best I think is plain stupid. If that were said before 2011, I could excuse it. But after leading the league in rating before his concussion in 2012 and the 2011 year before that, I think that's a stupid remark to make. If one of them played a long time, I suppose you could argue, two should, and three could. But that was a bad year.

How many quarterbacks pan out per year on average? There are 32 teams but most don't have an answer at QB. I'm not saying that Smith is the answer but rather to make a comment that three or four would be better, you would have to have some idea.

Thanks for that. Very funny. 3or 4? Come on man!

I owe an apology to Coach Edwards. I misread that article. It was Kevin Kietzman who said three or four. I skimmed and thought it was Edwards explaining himself re: not being scared to draft a QB. Saying that you would draft a quarterback is more of a general comment then what Kietzman said. That tells me if Edwards really were the GM, he would've looked at it more in depth.

May be some of those QBs could have panned out under right coaching but 3 or 4 starters from a single draft is already a very high number that rarely ends up becoming reality. Considering that 2013 may be the worst draft class of this century that's a very tall order.

Good read. This is spot on:

"What the Alex Smith parable should teach us is that nobody’s opinion on personnel moves in the NFL matters during the day, month or year the move is made. When columnists, radio hosts, analysts and tweeters whip up regional contempt for decision-makers, it serves only two purposes, and neither of them are good. First and foremost, it brings attention to the person doing the talking and the forum doing the publishing. Draft and trade grades get clicks because they’re easily digestible and gratify an impatient audience’s most base urges, like internet porn or movies about cars that go fast.

The second purpose is to generate undue stimulus on the shot-caller, good or bad. Trent Baalke is a genius, they said, because look at all these picks. Andy Reid is putting his neck on the line, they said. Because Alex Smith isn’t any good. It’s lazy, and it impacts franchises in ways that often can’t be measured. Fans, echoing their media conductors, begin to believe the team is headed in the wrong direction, and now tickets aren’t moving as quickly as ownership would like, and general managers and coaches suddenly have less leeway. Every decision-maker not named Bill Belichick oscillates on and off the hot seat. Meanwhile all the media takes, premature or not, just disappear into the ether, and every pundit is absolved of his sins."

I doubt any would have panned out. Really bad class. Remember at the time Dorsey had done plenty of work looking at that qb class, and then they made the trade.

This quote is from an article on mmqb:

"So our Lesson of the Week could be the lesson for any week, but is relevant now because of the trade of Garoppolo and the massive trickle-down effect it might have. That is: If you get the quarterback question right, like the Eagles have, whatever you paid doesn’t matter."

Dorsey kept digging and came up with Mahomes, then had the balls to pull the trigger. He may be gone but i am very hopeful he set us up for years at the hardest position to find in all of sports.

Good job, Veach, on scouting. Good job making it happen, Dorsey. If Veach weren't GM now, I would have discounted it as just something scouts do, but he was vehemently pushing for Mahomes. Hunt was Dorsey's guy.
