mocking the bye...

Recommended Posts

I know it is a little early for mock offseasons but with a bye week it is a little slow as a chiefs fan. So here is an offseason mock.

*I would like a new DC brought in and I would like to see us move to the 4-3 or an even front. I believe that Kpass and Houston would dominate as our ends in this package. Ford and Dadi would be good pass rush substitutes. But since we are a 3-4 team I will  go with that.

Releases/trades or not resigned-

ALex Smith QB- We trade him to a team like the Jets for a 2nd rounder and a 4th rounder. Smith is a guy that teams will bring in to help groom their young guys. He will also stabalize their QB spot like he has done for us.

DJ, Hali, Zombo, Demtrius Harris, Logan are all let go or released.

Ford is brought back but with the knowledge that he is a pass rush specialist and not a starter.

Free Agents-

Sheldon Richardson DL- This is our big splash. He would look real good opposite Jones. Allowing Bailey to come off the bench.

I also hope that we get Brian Hill off of the Falcons Practice squad this year. A big physical back to pair with west and Hunt.

Draft-

2. J.C. Jackson 6'1" 195 CB Maryland- Big physical kid that has very good coverage skills. Has round 1 talent. But has also had off the field issues. He was kicked out of Florida for armed robbery charges. He was later acquitted of these. Also was around a shooting in which he was shot and a friend too. But has been good since being at Maryland. It is time to get a top level talent to play opposite Peters. This kid is a good tackler too.

2. Adonis Alexander 6'3" 200 CB/S Virginia Tech- I like this kid as a FS. I know people are happy with ron Parker. But he is over 30 and very average. This kid can come in and back up for a year then take over. He has very good speed and range. Has good hands too. he is a much more physical player than Parker.

3. Tyquan Lewis 6'4" 260 OLB Ohio State - We need more pass rushers. Especially when injury hits. The more pass rushers the better we can be. This kid is a also big enough and physical enough to hold against the rush.

4. Taven Bryan 6'5" 295 DE Florida - a big physical kid. Has really strong hands. Has an explosive first step too. Could rise in the draft and go sooner.

4. Mike Gesicki 6'6" 250 TE Penn State - A big physical TE that catches well. But is a really good blocker too. A real TE to pair with Kelce.

5. traded for Cam Erving

6. Khalil Mckenzie 6'3" 325 NT Tennessee - We need a big physical NT. This kid is big and strong and moves well.

7. Richard Lagow 6'6" 240 QB Indiana - Big arm QB. We need depth and continuing to build the position. Never stop trying even if you think you have your guy. Qb's can be flip for future draft picks. Reid is good at developing.

Roster:

QB- Mahomes, Bray, Lagow

RB- Hunt, Ware, West, Hill

FB- Sherman

WR- Hill, Robinson, Conley, Wilson, DAT, Chesson

TE- Kelce, Galicki, Travis

LT- Fisher, Erving

LG- Ehringer, Mama

 C- Morse, Fulton

RG- LDT, Witzmann

RT- Schwartz, Erving

DE- Jones, Bryan

NT- Mckenzie, RNR

DE- Richardson, Bailey

OLB- Houston, Lewis, Dadi

ILB- Ragland, WIlson

ILB- Eligwe, Pierre-louis, Smith

OLB- Kpass, Ford, Dadi

CB- Peters, Lampkin, Acker

CB- Jackson, Mitchell, Acker

NB- Nelson, Gaines

SS- Berry, Murray, Sorenson

FS- Parker, Alexander, Mcquay

I would probably pay some FA WR as well. A proven veteran would make a huge difference for Mahomes, similar to Carr and Crabtree. Doesn't have to be a big name #1 but a decent possession receiver should be fine. I like the emphasis on defense as it's the critical aspect to improve but probably wouldn't keep Ford. Just let him go and pay that 9 million to a decent FA that can actually play in 3-4.

The nt is the lynchpin of the line and you're counting on a 6th round pick.

considering we are only in our base defense 35% of the time. I think we are ok. It's not like Logan had transformed us or Miller. But I don't think big money is smart for this position either

Yeah I thought about that too, I would probably let DAT go and put a very in there

I usually enjoy your mocks but I'm not a huge fan of this one. I don't think there's anyway Kpass is playing OLB at 285 lbs. I wouldn't have expected you to be one of those that actually saw this as a possibility. I think he starts at DE regardless of if we are in an even or odd front next season. He's raw but he's got immense upside and could be a force. This is the main reason I think signing Richardson and using an early round pick on a DE would be overkill and a misuse of our budget and picks. Then again our run defense is so pathetic maybe this is what we need to do.

I think ILB is a HUGE priority this offseason and you've ignored it. This is where I would be looking to invest in an impact player on the defensive side of the ball. I also think LG is a very big need and you left that out as well.

I like how you prioritized CB, and I like your thinking on getting a better backup TE. But as Xen said we can't be counting on a late round pick as our NT if we stay with a 3-4 front. Whether it's Sutton or another DC calling plays, we need our NT on the field more on first and second down. If we changes to an even front obviously this all changes anyway.

Kpass was quoted as saying he could play at 260 or 290. But being 260 is easier for him than 290. At 265 or 270 would be just right at OLB.

I'm not in the ilb camp. I think eligwe could be something. I also think Ragland will continue to get more comfortable on his knee. Then Wilson and Pierre-lewis make solid backups. I also like Terrance Smith.

Going into next year counting on Eligwe to be an impact MLB is just as foolish as going into this year expecting DJ to be one was. Terrible idea.

Wouldn't drafting another and expecting be just as foolish? What if the coaches feel really about eligwe? Does him not being a first rounder really matter that much? Because we don't have a first rounder this year. So is a second rounder going to be that much better than a young talented kid who has a year in the system? And a yeast behind DJ?

A stud ILB would transform this defense into a much better one.  That and if Berry can return full speed.  CB is a need, but replacing DJ is a top priority.

No that's what I was saying. If the Chiefs are gonna spend anywhere in free agency I think top priority should be at ILB. I dont know who "Shop" is...What about yeast?

Looks to be one of the weaker groups in recent years. Still I think a middle of the road guy could provide some stability next to Ragland.

Other than the obvious QBs, I wasn't impressed with any of the free agents at any postion.

I just don't see anyone on the list that does whay some here want.

Why not see what eligwe and Ragland bring us?

Pierre-Louis showed he could be good last week.

And Ramik had showed he is solid.

I think our ILB issues are more about DJ had lost a couple steps, Ragland is building confidence in his knee, the line has been terrible, and we are building young guys right now. Eligwe, Pierre-Louis, Ramik, Ragland, Terrance Smith

I've agreed that we don't need ILB for the past year or so.  I see where it could be a need, but if we're trading for a drafting these guys let's give them time year to develop.  I've liked what I've seen out of Wilson, P.L. and Ragland.  Eligwe is probably the furthest behind in developing.

I think our run defense suffered from the loss of Berry and our DL is not getting any push.  Coupled with DJ being slowed down as well.

Hopefully during the bye week we see more snaps for P.L. and Ragland.

Our ILB play this year has been truly awful. I don't really see anything in any of the guys on the roster that would make me think there is hope for them in the future. It's too important of a position to just have a bunch of maybe might sometimes handle it.

I don't necessarily disagree, but IMO our DL is a bigger issue.  Chris Jones is the only real talent on the DL.  They never get push or any QB pressures.

It's more than ok to get push and pash rush from the DL.

A good DL will make any ILB'ing look good and vice versa IMO.

IDK, I think there's a possibility that KPL/Egliwe and Ragland might work out...At least until we can draft a good one. Those young guys are willing to hit and tackle and play physical. I think putting these guys in positions to make plays makes more of an impact to the defense than anything right now.

I hope you are right, but I don't see it. They seem equally poor in the run game as the passing game. You never see pressure from a middle linebacker and you never see one of them doing anything well in coverage. And we are giving up almost 5 yards per carry and over 130 yards per game. I don't know what you are seeing that makes you feel fuzzy about any of them. When you watch DJ in his prime, or Donnie Edwards, they just have a nose for the ball and make plays. We seriously lack that now. And I think it's made our secondary worse because they are asked to do so much in run support.

The Chiefs desperately need a new DE. Bennie Logan has been or only solid run defender up front, and as much as I like Chris Jones, he's been extremely poor and inconsistent defending the run.

I really liked what I saw from KPL and Ragland in the Dallas game. Seems like they are starting to really get the gist of the defense, which for Ragland is great bc he's basically a rookie.

DJ is a huge reason we are not doing well stopping the run and it sucks, but it's reality. He's not hitting the hole to stop runs anymore.

We also miss Eric Berry really bad.
