The 2017 draft!!!!!..an utter disaster?

Recommended Posts

QB: Reid was happy with Smith managing things

RB: Ware and West are a proven duo

OT: Two of the top OT contracts are in town

OG: One of the highest paid RGs in town and some LG competition

OC: Morse is a good player with Fulton providing enough presence at backup

TE: Kelce is a stud and they are high on others in the mix

WR: Maclin was still on the roster, Hill and Conley are promising youngsters that need more snaps, Robinson and Wilson contribute at a decent level

DE: Jones is a stud and Bailey is a proven asset, Nunes-Roches is a solid backup

NT: Logan is a good run defender in the middle, Miller has decent experience

OLB: Ford was supposed to be at least an average guy, they picked up the option for a reason. Houston finally starting the season healthy

ILB: DJ was coming back healthy, Wilson did very well last year and guys like KPL were hidden gems that come from a very LB friendly environment

CB: Peters is a shutdown guy, Mitchell showed a lot of promise and needs to earn a paycheck, Nelson is a tough guy who sticks on the receiver with intensity

S: Berry is probably the best in the league, Parker is a good compliment and they love Sorenson

This was the environment entering the draft. Even if Chiefs didn't draft anyone the idea was that this is a competitive team that would easily get to the playoffs. There's a 33 year-old QB that needs to be replaced and depth is needed all over the place. That's what Chiefs focused on in the draft. Some things didn't go our way and some assumptions were definitely wrong but in such a scenario there was no way any starters would come via the draft unless the Chiefs would give up on Mahomes.

Nice post, I think this about sums things up. Bottom line - you don’t turn 10 draft picks into 6 like the Chiefs did in the 2017 draft if you think your team is filled with holes. The Chiefs went BPA because they felt they had a complete team which could compete for a SB. I’m glad those of us who understand football and the draft process can agree on this.

Here are some facts. Not thoughts, facts.

Fact 1

You cannot properly judge a draft for 3 years. Why? Because most guys don't make it at all in the NFL and of the ones that do, most take more than 1 year to develop.

Fact 2

Making an arguement that the chiefs should have drafted x player cause they're killing it with x team is not realistic. You are A) ignoring the much more numerous group of players drafted who are NOT killing it; B ) making assumptions like x player fits in our system and C) ignoring the fact that the entire draft is statistically a crapshoot every year.

Fact 3

We knew for a FACT that KC was drafting for the future in 2017. They said it. Fans have been absolutely gnashing at the teeth over not drafting a qb. Well, we finally went and got one. But there is a cost and the cost is not being in position to draft the guys considered more ready to play this year.

Now we can argue about KPass. But Hunt obviously was ready to contribute. Past the 3rd round most guys on EVERY TEAM don't contribute beyond special teams as a rookie.

So let's stop with the cherry picking revisionist drafting.

Where were you at draft time calling out which 1 guy out of every 100 would be the the one killing it now?

It's not just kpass though, it's Eligwe and Chesson aswell. Plus they drafted other guys who are currently on the practice squad and don't look like getting anywhere near the main roster. I've accepted that this draft will ultimately be judged on how well Mahomes and Hunt do. But imo it's been poor in the main because unlike other teams we've been unable to get more talent that could at least contribute even in a little way. The fact is in 2016 we had Jones, Ehinger, Hill and Murray all at least contributing something. Weren't they all young too? Yet there's excuses made for this years class.

LOL "Complete team" who were dumped out of the playoffs at the first chance!!!..I see the "football brainiac" is still struggling with simple logic :D .

We lost by only 2 points to a team which had won 9 straight games despite our QB playing like crap and injuries on defense which completely deleted run defense.

Dorsey banked on one more season of solid play from Tamba and DJ which has not happened.
