Chiefs OC Matt Nagy to call plays again Sunday vs. Raiders

Recommended Posts

I find it funny this is making news each week.  Will this be the new norm for Andy or is he trying to help Nagy's resume?

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was happy enough with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s Week 13 performance to allow him to call offensive plays again in Week 14.

Reid handed play-calling duties to Nagy last week as sort of a test run and Nagy did well. The Chiefs scored 31 points in that game, their most since Week 5.

Allowing Nagy to call plays against the Oakland Raiders seems like a no-brainer after Week 13. The Chiefs struggled mightily on offense for several weeks prior to that game, while quarterback Alex Smith went on a cold streak which caused several fans and media members to call for Patrick Mahomes to replace Smith.

With Nagy at the helm, Smith put up 366 yards passing, four touchdowns and 70 yards rushing last week. Both Smith and the offense as a whole looked refreshed.

Keep in mind however that while Nagy is calling the plays, Reid is still setting the installs during practice. Josh Brisco of ESPN Kansas City had the best analogy of Reid and Nagy’s duties:

By the way, "giving up playcalling" is not "Reid loosening his vice grip on the offense." This is Reid buying the groceries, prepping the ingredients and giving Nagy the recipe. Now Nagy has to cook.
This is basically Blue Apron for offensive coordinators. #Chiefs

Chiefs have a way to big playbook. When you find something thats working stay with it until the defense stops it. Andy bought into the genius crap the talking heads were declaring. Seems he was focused on new plays and his ego more than winning. The downfall started with the insane throw by HIll.

All the WCO guys have big playbooks. There are many multiple superbowl wins with that offense. The playbook isn't the problem.

Missed all the other teams using so many  trick plays like a tight end throwing downfield etc. Thanks for clarifying the problem.

My problem with the playbook is so much of it is swing and screen. The offense in itself is very conservative. We need to play the seams and deep thirds more to balance it out.
