IMO the biggest thing this secondary needs is a pass rush in front of them.

We’ve got two guys who’ve had 10 plus sack seasons at OLB and a third now who was our top draft pick this year with legit potential. There’s at least some legit hope here.

I'm hoping KPass makes a substantial jump this year also.

,However it happens it needs to improve drastically, alongside with stopping the run.

Damn, a few beers and I'm talking to myself.

I think pass rush and run defense will be better but lits gonna take health and at least one of the young guys really emerging for it to significant enough. It would sure help if we can simply be a better tackling team.

I agree. 2019 is gonna be this teams awakening as a serious threat to reach the SB every year, as long as Mahomes is who we think he is. Just think, we’ve got two 2s next year also. Exciting stuff!

Secondary is a concern. I think we have a little less talent than opening day last year, but the loss of Berry was a big blow. And Peters and Parker having their worst year as Chiefs hurt as well.

I believe in Fuler and don’t know about Amerson or Nelson. Hopefully one of them will be able to hold up the outside spot.

Pass rush is Houston and a whole lot of hoping. Ford is what he is at thus point. A third down rush specialist how diesn’t produce from the position he is at. Kpass and Speaks are a complete mystery.

Pass rush looks to have a better chance of producing to me than DBs.

I agree, especially with the tackling. It went from bad to atrocious last year.

I think our primary issue was the lack of sure tackles. Most of the time we managed to slow down the opponents only to have them recover and move forward. We need to have more definitive tackling. That was DJ's #1 contribution IMO but he lost it after the injury.

As much as I want this year to be off the charts, I think it's going to be a giant learning curve on all sides. I think PM has the ability to light it up, but will throw quite a few picks as he learns and more tape becomes available. Defense is a huge mystery and still a few good pieces away. At no point last year did I feel a lead was safe and there's nothing that I see so far that makes me feel any different this year besides our ILB's and a healthy Berry. Even if our new guys stop the run better I think we will get lit up in pass defense.

I think we have the same potential to win the west again as we do to finishing 3rd in our division. I think raiders are going to be awful personally.

I looked back at every season in the Reid era and we’ve actually been bottom third of the league in run defense every season but one. How in the world have our division opponents not figured out they need to go to a power running game and forget about the pass happy finesse schemes if they want to win West?

That said I agree DJ and Berry have been relied on for years to clean up messes and bail the defense out for its shortcomings.

Agree completely. I mean how is Gus Bradley not licking his chops week one to throw some stuff at Mahomes there’s no way he’s seen. And they have the pass rushers to speed up the decision making. It takes time and experience to recognize defenses in this league. I expect sn entertaining roller coaster in 2018. Last years roller coaster was unwatchable at times.

On the other side of the coin, how excited is Andy to get the Chargers week 1?

Andy said he has changed the offense to fit Mahomes and we saw it week 17 in Denver. A lot of air raid stuff is gonna be put in.

Andy has to be licking his chops that his biggest projected

division rival on the road will have very little knowledge about his new QB or the offense they will be running.

Andy embarrassed Belichick last year week 1 with tons of new stuff. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen again.

We’ve owned the Chargers and extra time to prepare for this one opponent is usually a clear advantage for Andy. And you are right that while we will run the same system, it won’t be the same offense.

I will say that last year was the first year the defense didn’t carry this team. We have been top 5 in points allowed except for 2016 when we were #7.

We were #7 in yards also in 2014 and 2015.

It I completely agree about DJ and Berry being relied on to stop the run wouthout much help. I would maybe say Houston also. Plus those guys have had devistating inhuries and missed a lot of games.

I hope we get back to what we had even if we can’t stop the run. A top 5 D in points allowed and this offfense. Ridiculous.

Building the offense to fit PM is great and all, but I think we will only be as strong as Reids commitment to the run game. No need for him to become pass happy with a rookie QB, we have to stay consistent feeding Hunt.

Sutton’s scheme worked well until pass rushers stopped performing and we were left with one reliable cornerback. He was always willing to sacrifice run defense to stop big plays and knew he had ball hawks to force turnovers and derail drives. We figured out this is how you beat teams in the West. Nobody seemed however to adjust to us and now they are all playing catch up.

We have a lot of turnover on the defensive side and a new starting QB (and coordinator) on the offensive side. I have absolutely no idea what this team will be capable of. Weapons are in place. Will the Oline be better than last year? Their biggest problem was consistency from week to week. Need to be more consistent. Will Mahomes deliver what we all are expecting? Will we be better at stopping the run?...rushing the QB? So many unknowns going into this season. I am nervous and excited at the same time. Should be interesting.

I will say this...not a lot of folks are expecting big things this year. Always prefer the Chiefs when they are flying under the radar.

Agreed. Our CBs and Safeties have always been second rate except Peters and Berry. It was the loss of the pass rush that killed us.

So that means he’s wrong?

How about his analysis of other teams.

'Chargers are much improved' - Why, because we've been told this for the last 5 years?  Somehow Rivers must not be getting older and isn't the superstar QB he used to be, oh maybe it's that home field advantage they have....

'Raiders will be better' - Gives no reason for that, why, because they got a coach who was terrible at the end of his career and hasn't coached in years.

Yea he's wrong because he doesn't give valid examples and as other people pointed out, aside from Peters, losing DJ and Hali is nowhere near as bad as they are making it out to be considering they weren't relevant last year.

I guess we’ll find out now, won’t we? I’m not sure why many on this board are expecting Mahomes to come in and light the league up. Really, the most logical and objective expectation is that we do take a step back this year under Mahomes first year given everything that’s happened with this team. It may or may not happen, but I believe it’s the most likely outcome. Now 2019 is what I’m excited for. Then we should have lofty goals as long as PM2 pans out.

Agreed, but look at it this way...

Denver traded up to get Paxton Lynch and 2 years later had to sign a stop gap veteran because Lynch couldn't win the job against scrubs the past 2 years.

I would be furious if we had done this just one season after drafting Mahomes, let alone 2.

I think the thing for me is how getting Mahomes was handled and what's been done to make him the starter.

You couldn't have asked for a better transition from Smith. I never imagined Smith having that much trade value.

I'm hopeful KC drafting Mahomes has the same affect Russell Wilson did for Seattle as Mahomes is surrounded by a ton of top tier offensive talent.

What I’m really intrigued by is how Andy will handle his young QB. A lot of those quick pre snap reads Alex was so adept at, aren’t what I’d consider to be a likely strength at least early for Mahomes. I’d think it’s likely we actually make a concerted effort to run the ball more. But this isn’t the Andy we know, so we will see.
