KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs must cut their roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET Saturday, Sept. 1. Here's a final 53-man roster projection:

QUARTERBACK (3): Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne, Chase Litton

The only intrigue is whether the Chiefs will keep an undrafted rookie in Litton or veteran Matt McGloin as the third quarterback. Litton has shown enough potential that he's worth keeping around.

RUNNING BACK (5): Kareem Hunt, Spencer Ware, Damien Williams, Darrel Williams, Anthony Sherman

Ware is still trying to make it all the way back from last year's knee injury, so unless the Chiefs are convinced he will get there soon, his roster spot seems less than secure. Even if Ware makes it, I'll have the Chiefs keeping three other running backs plus a fullback in Sherman at a position of some depth.

WIDE RECEIVER (6): Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson, De'Anthony Thomas, Marcus Kemp

Thomas is similar to Ware in that he's trying to make it all the way back from last year's leg injury, which was a break in his case. But he'll stay if the Chiefs believe he will soon. Jehu Chesson gets the final roster spot instead of Kemp if the Chiefs award it on the basis of special teams play.

TIGHT END (2): Travis Kelce, Jace Amaro

Demetrius Harris, the second-string tight end, will serve an NFL suspension for the opener and won't be able to return until Week 2. The question is whether the Chiefs try to get through one game with only a pair of players at this position.

OFFENSIVE LINE (9): Eric Fisher, Mitchell Schwartz, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, Cam Erving, Mitch Morse, Parker Ehinger, Bryan Witzmann, Jordan Devey, Kahlil McKenzie

The Chiefs have some tough decisions to make here in part because McKenzie and Ryan Hunter are interesting developmental prospects. So I have them keeping more linemen than they usually do.

DEFENSIVE LINE (6): Chris Jones, Xavier Williams, Allen Bailey, Derrick Nnadi, Jarvis Jenkins, Justin Hamilton

I initially had the Chiefs keeping only five here but added Hamilton after I factored in Allen Bailey's knee injury, which has kept him out of the lineup recently.

LINEBACKER (10): Justin Houston, Dee Ford, Anthony Hitchens, Reggie Ragland, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Breeland Speaks, Dorian O'Daniel, Ukeme Eligwe, Ben Niemann, Terrance Smith

Niemann is the third and final undrafted rookie that I have making the roster.

CORNERBACK (5): Kendall Fuller, Steven Nelson, David Amerson, Orlando Scandrick, Tremon Smith

The Chiefs recently added to their numbers here by signing Scandrick, but this still feels light in terms of not just quality but also quantity.

SAFETY (4): Eric Berry, Leon McQuay, Eric Murray, Armani Watts

We'll know the Chiefs are concerned about Eric Berry's sore heel holding up if they keep a fifth safety.

SPECIALISTS (3): Harrison Butker, Dustin Colquitt, James Winchester

The only thing I'm certain of is that Butker will kick, Colquitt will punt and Winchester will snap.

Surprise cut canidates....We clearly aren't releasing all these guys but 1 and maybe even 2 is at least possible. We have over 9 million in CAP room right now so we aren't forced to cut anyone we don't want too. We are sitting at 35 million in CAP space for 2019 as well. Probably the best shape weve been in a long time too. Product of a young team.

Allen Bailey - Could use his ability to set the edge and play that 2 man front at times, but he can't stay on the field.  CAP savings 5.8 million

Spencer Ware- He doesn't look completely healthy, but maybe thats just rust.  CAP savings 1.5 million

Bryan Witzman - What does he really add here? CAP savings 1.2 million

Orlando Scandrick - Wouldn't be the first time a player was signed and then quickly released. CAP savings 1.5 million

David Amerson - He's looked completely lost but there were reports he had a solid camp before preseason games.  CAP savings 1.3 million

I guess thats possible. The fact he's touring the NFL without a contract seems to indicate he's either still not healthy or looking for way to much money.

Not playing this year won't help in that regard.  There will come a point in which he will have to sign a one year prove it deal.  I think we need to be all over that.  Would hate for things to all fall in place and we fall short because we ended up a decent DB short.

If he’s healthy I agree he will sign somewhere very soon.  We’ve just got no idea if he really is. Teams reluctance to give a proven player more than a 1 year deal has to mean something though.

Worried about Berry.  Again, I think its plantar fasciitis.  That could take him out half the season or more.  I've learned never to worry too much about him.  He is some kind of superman.  But I recall that chemotherapy ages you and does not do wonders for any tissues, and he is getting up there.  In that regard, I am really struck by the absence of any explanation for his heel or any real news.  It is almost like the Chiefs are keeping radio silence about him.  Is that just coincidence, or are they (shhhh) trying to maintain trade value.  Worse...could he be contemplating retirement?  There has been so little talk about these things, that it seems a bit suspicious.  I am hoping these are ridiculous notions, and that superman will retain his cape with the Chiefs.

They said he could play.   precautions.

That could mean what it says...

OR it would also be  useful to say it, if they want to get a better draft pick package from somewhere.  You know...he does live in Atlanta...just sayin'.  I have no idea about this.  My hopes are that he is fine and will remain a Chief.  Hoping and knowing are very different things, of course.

After a couple of months, with all the medical knowledge, imaging, and technology, why can't anyone figure out why his heel hurts? If it is plantar fasciitis, why not just say so?  Do they really not know?  Not possible to not know.  Or did he just bruise it while walking around  his house by stepping on a dried piece of Sugru?  Bruise or plantar fasciitis?  Why won't they tell us? It is impossible that they wouldn't know.  Think about it.  But all we get is "his heel still hurts."  "He'll be ready to play." And he misses the entirety of camp.  The only thing obvious to me is that the organization is not being forthcoming with us, most likely with the intention of not being forthcoming to other teams or possible trade partners.
