Pay the man - Dee Ford

You're awfully delusional if you think the Chiefs aren't going to attempt to re-sign Dee Ford.

He's playing injured as we speak. His life literally depends on being on the field this year to garner some market value. Not sure if he would be on the field if he already got paid. I would probably sign him but to a modest deal with lots of incentives based on playing time. Keep in mind that this is his best season so far and he's still terrible in everything that's not pass rush. By the old terms, he's simply a 3rd down player. That shouldn't cost anything more than 5-6 million a year.

I'm not a Dee Ford fan at all, but the dude is a pass-rush specialist and he's among the highest in the NFL at it right now and is playing for a team built to get an early lead and pass-rush the hell out of the opposing QB.  He's got value here.

He definitely has value. However a guy with a bad back that hasn't healed in over a year shouldn't have that much of a value at 28. He's already due to miss significant time in the offseason with the injury and basically Dontari Poe v2.0 waiting to happen.

I don't think it's a big deal if the guaranteed money is front-loaded in a new contract.

Not even sure if he'll play in 2019 either. Personally I would be more inclined to get a pick for him and let some other team worry about his health. Speaks has been picking up nicely and looks like he could start at a higher level by the end of this season. He could be a good duo with Houston as a 3-down guy before KPass or some other OLB becomes the starter in 2020 opposite to him.

If Chiefs are willing to spend money at the position this offseason I would loook to add a true OLB that can actually play all aspects of the position. This will be Ford's only chance at a big contract and I doubt he would be asking for a "specialist" deal considering that he's always one awkward push away from retirement.

Well any player really is one awkward push away from retirement.  I'm really thinking he and his agent are going to ask for the moon, which is why I'd transition tag over franchise tag.  The Chiefs keep him for another year at a lower salary vs the franchise and he and his agent can see what the market really looks like for him.  If he gets a deal that they can't match than well life will continue.

With that said, I think werthers originals and the FO value him a lot more than we do.

Yeah but in Ford's case the risk is higher as his back is still injured. I think some 4-3 team will make him an offer that makes no sense for us to match and we'll get no compensation in return. We have spent more than enough  money on injured vets like Hali, Houston, Berry, etc to go ahead and do it for someone that's in a worse situation with much less production on the field. In that regard Poe was handled better IMO and could set the example for Ford.

Yeah I'm willing to bet we franchise him and cut Houston which is close to being a wash on the books.  This moves us into next year with Ford Speaks and Kpass.  The position isn't awesome but its not a huge need either.   Regardless if Ford is hurt he is pulling a Justin Houston of sorts (Justin had played at a high level for mulitple seasons) which might force our hand in franchising him.   We better not open the check book for him though, like y'all said.  He is an injury away from riding the pine into the sunset.    Glad he's having a pro bowl year this year though with all our injuries.    I think the only way this changes is if Houston comes back and has like 10 sacks down the stretch and shows us some glimpses that he is truely back, something I'm not sure is even possible any more.

Speaks has to lose weight if he realistically will be anything more than a pass rusher. I really don’t want to sign Ford if he thinks he can command a huge salary like Houston. Franchise for one year if you must. Team friendly maybe. But I don’t trust a guy who is hurt and inconsistent his whole career up until the contract year...

Agree. Houston is certainly still a good player but not close to the dynamic playmaker he's being paid to be. If Dee makes it through the season ironically that almost exactly pays his franchise tag designation that I agree we should apply. Plus there's not a ton of other places to go to save real money. Id defintely cut D Sorenson too at  2.7 million savings. We are in pretty good shape CAP wise if we do this.
